The first clip from The Punisher: One Last Kill has been released, offering fans a sneak peek at the upcoming Marvel Television Special Presentation that will stream tonight on Disney+. This project is part of Marvel’s mature-audience lineup and sees Jon Bernthal reprising his role as Frank Castle in a darker, more personal chapter of the character’s journey.

According to Marvel Television and details shared with the release, the special is set to premiere on May 12 at 6 p.m. PT exclusively on Disney+. The narrative follows Frank Castle after his long-standing quest for revenge, picking up at a moment when he struggles to find a clear purpose for his violent mission.

In the new clip and official description, Frank appears deeply broken and exhausted. He believes he has avenged the murder of his wife and children, yet he finds himself searching for meaning in a life that feels hollow. This changes when Ma Gnucci, portrayed by Judith Light, arrives seeking her own revenge, pulling him back into conflict.

Jon Bernthal, who also serves as executive producer, collaborated on the story with director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Green elaborated on how the project came together and the personal nature of the character’s development.

“It was amazing to have the character himself say, ‘I want you to do this.’ There is no greater compliment as a filmmaker,” Green noted, reflecting on Bernthal’s involvement in the project.

Green also shared how his early connection to the character shaped his approach. He reminisced about rediscovering old Punisher comics from his childhood while preparing for the project.

“Of all the comic books, from Fantastic Four to X-Men, The Punisher was at the top of the pile,” he stated.

The director explained that the special focuses on Frank Castle’s emotional state rather than relentless action. While violence remains a significant aspect of the story, it is initially used sparingly to illustrate Frank’s mental decline before the action escalates.

“This is probably the darkest state that we’ve ever seen Frank Castle in,” Green remarked. “We hold back for a long time before the action comes. Once we literally set him ablaze, it’s full-on action.”

The special also reintroduces familiar characters like Karen Page and Curtis Hoyle, grounding Frank’s journey in his past relationships and trauma. According to Green, Frank’s perspective is unstable, and part of the story plays with the distinction between reality and his mental constructs.

This project is crafted as a standalone story within the Marvel universe, yet it carries emotional weight tied to Frank’s history in previous appearances, including Daredevil: Born Again. The filmmakers describe it as more of a cinematic one-off than a traditional series installment.

Bernthal’s portrayal remains central to the tone of the special, with Green commending his dedication to the role and the physical demands it entails.

“There’s no greater trooper. Someone who is going to set himself on fire for the fans is someone who is committed to the craft,” Green remarked.

With its darker tone, emotional focus, and limited special format, The Punisher: One Last Kill is poised to delve into Frank Castle at his lowest point before thrusting him back into violence once again when it streams on Disney+ tonight.
