James Cameron Reveals Why Leonardo DiCaprio Almost Missed His ‘Titanic’ Role
In a recent career retrospective with GQ, filmmaker James Cameron reflected on the casting process for ‘Titanic’ and shared intriguing insights about how close Leonardo DiCaprio came to losing the role of Jack Dawson.
Although the 1997 film is now regarded as one of the most iconic movies in history, Cameron noted that DiCaprio’s initial audition experience was anything but smooth.
Cameron recalled that DiCaprio made a remarkable first impression during their meeting, garnering attention from everyone in the office. According to Cameron, the actor “charmed everybody” at that initial encounter, which led to him being invited back to read alongside Kate Winslet, who had already been cast as Rose.
However, it was during this second meeting that complications arose. Cameron explained that DiCaprio was taken aback by the formal audition process and was surprised when asked to read lines on camera. The director remembered DiCaprio questioning the procedure, stating he “didn’t read,” which prompted Cameron to briefly end the meeting and contemplate moving on.
Cameron vividly described the moment, saying, “He said, ‘You mean, I’m reading?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘Oh, I don’t read.’ I shook his hand and said, ‘Thanks for coming by.’”
Cameron also elaborated on his strict approach during casting, emphasizing the scale and demands of the production. He stated, “This is a giant movie that is going to take two years of my life… So, I’m not going to f— it up by making the wrong decision in casting. So, you’re going to read, or you’re not going to get the part.”
Eventually, DiCaprio agreed to perform the screen test, although Cameron mentioned that the actor was initially hesitant. However, once the camera started rolling, his performance transformed and ultimately secured his role in the film.

‘Titanic’ eventually became a worldwide sensation and one of the highest-grossing films of all time. The love story of Jack and Rose, portrayed by DiCaprio and Winslet, not only defined their careers but also remains one of the most celebrated romances in contemporary cinema.
