Big epic films often build anticipation gradually, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is no exception. This highly anticipated movie has been in development for some time and has already become one of the most discussed upcoming releases in Hollywood. With a stellar cast and a narrative rooted in ancient mythology, it has captured the interest of both film enthusiasts and general audiences alike.

The project features a remarkable ensemble of well-known actors, presenting a modern, large-scale reinterpretation of a classic Greek tale. The early marketing has primarily focused on Odysseus’s journey and the world he navigates following the Trojan War. Recently, a new TV spot has heightened excitement by offering fans a closer glimpse at one of the film’s pivotal characters.

In the latest promotional clip, Zendaya makes her debut as Athena. In Greek mythology, Athena is revered as the goddess of wisdom and war, playing a crucial role in guiding Odysseus on his arduous journey home. In the brief scene featured in the TV spot, she shares the screen with Matt Damon, who portrays Odysseus, indicating her character’s significant involvement in his choices and path.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, the film is based on Homer’s ancient epic poem The Odyssey. It chronicles Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he faces numerous challenges in his quest to return home after the Trojan War. His journey is fraught with peril, testing his strength, patience, and intellect, all while he strives to reunite with his wife, Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.

The film boasts a large ensemble cast featuring major names such as Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and many others. Production is overseen by Nolan and Emma Thomas through their company Syncopy, with Universal Pictures handling the film’s distribution.

Nolan reportedly began crafting the screenplay in 2024 and swiftly moved to secure the project with Universal later that same year. Casting continued into early 2025, with filming taking place across various countries including Greece, Morocco, Italy, Iceland, and Scotland. Notably, the production is filmed using IMAX 70mm cameras, marking it as one of Nolan’s most technically ambitious projects to date.

With its grand-scale production and mythological narrative, The Odyssey is poised to be one of the year’s most significant cinematic releases. Zendaya’s first appearance as Athena adds an extra layer of excitement as audiences eagerly await how Nolan will bring the ancient world to life on screen.
