Macaulay Culkin Reflects on Catherine O’Hara’s Death and Their Unfinished Business
After the passing of his former ‘Home Alone’ co-star Catherine O’Hara earlier this year, Macaulay Culkin admits he is still grappling with the loss.
In a recent interview with The Gentleman’s Journal, Culkin, 45, shared how profoundly O’Hara’s death impacted him. He revealed that her passing in January was unexpected and has left him with emotions he has yet to process.
“When Catherine passed away in January, that hit me,” Culkin expressed. “That hit me pretty good ’cause, you know, it was just too soon. And I felt that we had unfinished business.”
Culkin conveyed that he still feels a connection to O’Hara and wishes they had more time together, stating he feels he owes her something.
“I definitely feel like I had unfinished business with her, you know? I feel like I owed her a favor — and I don’t like having an outstanding debt,” he added.
O’Hara, widely recognized for her role as Kevin McCallister’s mother in the ‘Home Alone’ films, passed away in January at the age of 71. Reports indicated her cause of death was a pulmonary embolism resulting from complications related to rectal cancer.
During the interview, Culkin also reflected on the loss of many peers from his early Hollywood days, noting that he sometimes feels like one of the last connections to that era.
“I’m not the tip of the sphere. I’m the butt of the sphere. I’m the caboose,” he remarked. “I’m bringing up some of that old Hollywood guard kind of thing.”
He continued by stating that his journey in the entertainment industry has always been unique and challenging to compare with others.
“I can’t look left and right and think: ‘Oh, those people have had a similar experience to me,’” Culkin shared. “But I try to cherish that as much as I can. I feel like I’m living a really uniquely wonderful life.”
Reports indicate that O’Hara is survived by her husband Bo Welch, their two sons, and several siblings. Her brother Michael O’Hara recently spoke about a dream he had of his late sister during an appearance on the “Dreams of Our Loved Ones” podcast.
“I was hugging her, which was really beautiful,” Michael recalled. “I guess it was sort of a goodbye.”
He also shared memories from the last months of her life, noting that she had gradually stopped speaking much on the phone while living in Los Angeles.
“The love, you know, continues no matter what. They’re always with us,” he remarked.
