Elijah Wood created a bit of a buzz at the Cannes Film Festival after seemingly breaking one of the event’s strict red carpet rules.

The actor was spotted taking a selfie with a group of attendees, despite the fact that selfies are prohibited on the official Cannes red carpet. This moment occurred while he was at the festival to present an honorary Palme d’Or to director Peter Jackson, famed for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.

The selfie ban has been in effect since 2018, aimed at preventing overcrowding and ensuring smooth guest movement during arrivals. The rule originated in 2015 when festival director Thierry Frémaux remarked, “You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie.” It later became an official regulation enforced by festival security.

Despite the prohibition, Wood was briefly filmed posing for a selfie with fellow attendees before moving on. There were no reports of security intervening or issuing any warnings during this incident.

Elijah Wood was primarily at Cannes to honor filmmaker Peter Jackson, presenting him with a special award. In his speech, Wood lauded Jackson’s influence on cinema and his global impact as a director.

He stated, “You gave the world something it had never seen before, and nothing was ever the same again,” adding, “You helped build a whole new film culture on the other side of the world.”

The selfie moment quickly gained attention online, as Cannes is known for its strict red carpet etiquette. However, reports indicate that there were no repercussions for Wood, and he continued with his scheduled appearances.

The Cannes Film Festival has been gradually adjusting to modern social media culture in certain aspects, while still maintaining some traditional rules. Although selfies remain banned on the red carpet, the festival has permitted limited use of new technology, including interviews filmed with wearable devices.

Nonetheless, the rules are taken seriously, and security is typically present to enforce them when necessary. In this instance, however, the incident seemed to be light-hearted rather than a significant breach.

Wood’s appearance ultimately focused on the tribute to Peter Jackson, but the brief selfie moment became one of the more discussed incidents of the festival day.
