What the Post-Credits Scene Means in the ‘Outlander’ Finale According to the Showrunner
The series finale of Outlander concluded with an unexpected post-credits scene that delivered one last surprise following the emotional ending of Claire and Jamie Fraser’s journey.
While the finale wraps up the primary storyline with an intense battlefield sequence, it doesn’t stop there. The scene transitions to a modern-day bookstore in America, creating a stark contrast to the historical drama that characterizes the series.
In this post-credits moment, author Diana Gabaldon appears as herself during a book signing event for Outlander. A journal placed beside her resembles the written records that Claire Fraser maintained throughout the narrative. During the signing, Gabaldon casually refers to the journal as a “wee bit of inspiration,” linking the fictional universe of the series back to its real-life origins.
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts shared that this scene was intended as a tribute. He mentioned it was designed to honor everyone who contributed to the show from the very beginning and to recognize the creative foundation that underpins the story.
According to Roberts, “our love letter and a thank you to all the crew that had been there from day one.” He also noted that the bookstore scene featured individuals who had been part of the series since its inception, placing them in the final moment as a form of acknowledgment.
Roberts further elaborated on including Diana Gabaldon in the final scene, expressing the creative team’s desire to honor her role in crafting the world of Outlander and the characters that shaped the entire series. “We also wanted to say thank you to [author] Diana [Gabaldon] for creating the world. It’s really her story,” he explained.

Additionally, Roberts revealed a behind-the-scenes detail about his own appearance in the scene. He confirmed that he makes a brief appearance in the bookstore sequence, although he was not filmed on set originally. Instead, he was digitally added later after filming a short green screen shot. “I was talked into doing a walk-through, so we did me on blue screen, and they put me in,” Roberts recounted.
Ultimately, the post-credits scene serves as a heartfelt closing gesture for the series, connecting the fictional realm of Outlander, its creator, and the real-life production team.
