Matthew McConaughey Reveals 22 Days Living Off-Grid in Peru as ‘Mateo’
Matthew McConaughey recently recounted an intriguing chapter from his early career when he took a break from Hollywood to live in Peru for 22 days without electricity. He shared this transformative experience on the “No Magic Pill” podcast.
During this time, McConaughey felt the weight of early fame becoming overwhelming. To escape his public persona, he traveled to Peru, adopting the name Mateo to avoid recognition and to distance himself from his celebrity status.
He explained that his intention was to reset his self-perception and discern which aspects of his life were genuine. “I needed to get my feet on the ground,” McConaughey expressed. “So I click out. Boom. Go to Peru. I needed to find it, to check the validation. I knew I had it, I just had to go prove it again. But I did question, now that I just got famous, I’ve got all this affiliation for this and that and the other. And I’m trying to decipher which part’s real, which part’s bullshit.”
Initially, McConaughey found the experience challenging and filled with uncertainty, describing those first days as “wonky.” However, as he settled into a routine of life away from fame, he gained clarity about his identity and his capacity to exist outside the pressures of Hollywood.
As the days passed, he began to feel more grounded. He realized that achieving comfort in that lifestyle demonstrated he could always return home if he wished. It was less about permanent escape and more about proving to himself that he could thrive without being defined by fame.
McConaughey noted that the locals in Peru knew him solely as Mateo, which added depth to his experience by stripping away the expectations tied to his celebrity. “I needed to meet people who knew me as Mateo,” he stated. “And at the end of 22 days, the tears in their eyes and the tears in my eyes and the hugs we had on the sadness and happiness of saying goodbye were all based off of the man they met named Mateo, who had nothing to do with the celebrity. It reaffirmed my own identity that, ‘Oh, I still got it. This is based on me.’”
This trip to Peru occurred during the early stages of McConaughey’s ascent to fame. He later distanced himself from Hollywood again by relocating his family to Texas, frustrated by being typecast in romantic comedies after major roles in films like The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
