Metal Sonic Revealed as ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ Wraps Filming Fans Get First Look

Director Jeff Fowler has officially completed filming on Sonic the Hedgehog 4, marking the conclusion of production for the next chapter in the beloved video game film series.

Fowler, who has helmed all three previous Sonic films, shared the news on X, expressing his enthusiasm for the project and commending the cast and crew for their efforts. He wrote, “On behalf of this amazing cast/crew, we have filmed the BEST Sonic Movie yet and can’t wait to share.”

Alongside the announcement, Fowler shared a behind-the-scenes snapshot of himself in the director’s chair, holding a figure of Metal Sonic, the robotic counterpart of Sonic that was hinted at in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. This image is now viewed as the first glimpse of the character’s return in the upcoming film.

Metal Sonic has been one of Sonic’s most notable adversaries in the games, and his inclusion in the live-action series hints at a more formidable challenge in the next installment.

While the storyline of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 remains under wraps, the returning cast is expected to feature Ben Schwartz as Sonic, alongside Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and more. The franchise continues to grow its impressive ensemble of both returning and new characters.

The Sonic film series has emerged as one of the most successful video game adaptations in Hollywood, with the franchise grossing over $1 billion worldwide across its three films. The latest installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in December 2024, became the highest-grossing film in the series to date.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog film, released in 2020, exceeded industry expectations with its strong box office results, while its 2022 sequel further boosted its global success.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently set to hit theaters on March 19, 2027.
