Ben Affleck’s Batman Suit Test Photos Emerge Online and Fans Are Thrilled
Recently uncovered behind-the-scenes photos of Ben Affleck’s Batman have made their way online, providing fans with a unique glimpse at the early suit tests crafted by Ironhead Studios. These images showcase Affleck in the Batsuit during an initial costume fitting, well before the final version was seen in the DC films.
Ironhead Studios shared the photos on Instagram, highlighting their work on the suit designs for ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. They emphasized a significant moment from the test, stating, “The first time the Bat turned his head,” which referred to the innovative movement and design of the early suit.
Affleck’s portrayal of Batman first debuted in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016), where he embodied an older, more hardened Bruce Wayne. This version aimed to depict a character who had been battling crime for years, becoming increasingly violent and cynical. He later reprised the role in ‘Justice League’ (2017) and ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ (2021), along with a cameo in ‘The Flash’ (2023).
At one point, Affleck was slated to direct and star in his own standalone Batman film, commonly referred to as “The Batman” during its early stages. This project was envisioned as a darker, detective-oriented narrative intended to expand his interpretation of the character within the DC Extended Universe. However, it was ultimately scrapped in its original form.
Affleck eventually stepped away from the role altogether. In various interviews, he expressed that the experience had become creatively and personally draining. He cited ongoing production challenges, script revisions, and the overall direction of the DC film universe as factors in his decision to depart. He noted that he no longer found joy in the role and felt it was time to move on.

Ultimately, the standalone Batman project he was developing was reimagined and handed over to director Matt Reeves, who subsequently created ‘The Batman’ (2022) featuring Robert Pattinson. This interpretation took a different approach and established its own narrative separate from Affleck’s storyline.
The newly released suit test photos provide fans with a fascinating look at what that earlier chapter of Batman could have entailed behind the scenes. They also underscore the extensive effort that went into crafting the armor and character movement before it made its way to the big screen.
Ironhead Studios shared these images as part of a retrospective on their design process, reminding viewers of the practical artistry behind one of the most iconic superhero costumes in contemporary cinema.
