‘The Boys’ surprised its audience once again with a remarkable cameo during Season 5 Episode 7. This time, it was none other than Samuel L. Jackson lending his voice to a furious hammerhead shark named Xander, and even Chace Crawford was caught off guard by this unexpected twist.

The latest episode of the popular Prime Video series moved the narrative closer to its climax, featuring a significant character death and escalating chaos surrounding Homelander and The Seven. However, one of the most talked-about moments online quickly became the scene where The Deep faced off against the irate shark threatening him in the water.

Crawford later confessed that he had no clue Jackson was behind the voice while they were filming the scene.

“I had no idea. I’m just talking to a tennis ball the whole time, in a freezing cold lake … he steals the whole scene,” Crawford remarked.

Series creator Eric Kripke shared insights into how the cameo was arranged. He mentioned that the team sought someone with a unique and instantly recognizable voice for Xander, and Jackson was their top choice from the beginning.

“We wanted a really distinct voice and who has a more distinct voice in Hollywood than Sam Jackson?” Kripke stated. “So we just went to his agent. He was our first choice, and we were like, Does he want to do this? It was really just taking a flyer. But then it came back, Oh yeah, he likes the show and totally, he’ll do it. Boy, that’s a bucket list moment, man, of Sam Jackson reading your dialogue.”

Fans quickly recognized Jackson’s voice as soon as Xander began yelling at The Deep. This brief scene instantly became one of the most unforgettable moments of the season.

The encounter also highlighted The Deep’s decline. After remaining loyal to Homelander for so long, he has now lost support from both Vought and the sea creatures he once communicated with. In the episode, Xander warns him to stay away from the ocean forever, leaving the character utterly isolated.

Some fans speculate that this moment could finally lead The Deep to turn against Homelander before the series concludes. After five seasons of poor choices and misplaced loyalty, the character may be reaching a breaking point.
