German actor Lars Eidinger has shared exciting details about his role as Brainiac in James Gunn’s ‘Man of Tomorrow.’ He provided fresh insights into how he perceives the DCU villain and why this character aligns with the complex roles he often chooses.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Eidinger discussed his career trajectory and the types of characters that attract him, particularly those that are intricate and often unsettling. He confirmed his portrayal of Brainiac in the upcoming DCU film, which serves as a sequel to ‘Superman’ and is helmed by James Gunn.

Reflecting on the character, Eidinger linked Brainiac to broader themes of storytelling, performance, and mythology. He views the role as transcending the typical comic book villain archetype, describing it in almost symbolic terms.

“Brainiac is described as the incarnation of Satan,” he remarked, noting that he finds this level of symbolism to be almost Shakespearean.

Eidinger emphasized that he does not see roles like Brainiac as merely good versus evil. Instead, he is drawn to the psychological and philosophical dimensions of characters, particularly those who operate outside conventional moral frameworks. He posited that even larger-than-life villains can mirror human thoughts and behaviors.

He also drew a comparison between superhero storytelling and theatre, highlighting that exaggerated characters and moral extremes can still convey emotional and philosophical depth when approached with seriousness. He referenced James Gunn’s previous work, noting a similar tone in how these narratives blend spectacle with profound ideas.

For Eidinger, Brainiac represents a continuation of his exploration of themes like power, control, and moral ambiguity. Having portrayed historical figures and controversial characters before, he expressed a preference for roles that provoke thought rather than provide comfort.

‘Man of Tomorrow’ will advance the narrative of Superman and Lex Luthor, who must collaborate against Brainiac. The film is part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe and is currently in production, with a release date set for 2027.
