FBI Finale Explained: OA’s Fate and Its Implications for Season 9
As ‘FBI’ gears up for Season 9, significant changes are on the horizon for OA. The Season 8 finale concluded with OA being dismissed from the FBI team at 26 Fed, but this isn’t the end of his journey.
In the finale, Maggie, OA, Scola, and Eva tackled a perilous case involving a stolen bioweapon. They had to collaborate with Anna and her strike team after the weapon was unleashed on a bus filled with civilians. While the FBI aimed to rescue the victims, Anna’s group had a contrasting agenda, prioritizing the retention of a serum that could be mass-produced, even at the expense of the infected civilians.
OA strongly opposed the directives from ADIC Green, who insisted the team move on and disregard the incident on the bus. After refusing to comply, OA was fired, a moment that left the team, especially Maggie, in shock.
At the episode’s conclusion, Anna approached OA at a bar, extending an offer for him to join her strike team. After considering her proposal, OA discreetly contacted Maggie and Isobel to inform them he would be going undercover as part of a strategy to dismantle Anna’s group from within.
In an interview with TV Insider, ‘FBI’ showrunner Mike Weiss confirmed that OA’s new role will not diminish Zeeko Zaki’s screen time in Season 9. “We’re really excited to see him deep undercover in a different way,” Weiss stated.
According to Weiss, only Maggie and Isobel will be aware of the truth initially. The rest of the team will believe OA was genuinely fired, but this secret won’t remain concealed for long.
“I think it’ll be interesting to see a little bit of the fallout of this secret ripple over the course of the first section of Season 9,” Weiss explained.
Weiss also noted that ADIC Green is unaware of OA’s undercover status. He teased that viewers will eventually witness Isobel revealing the truth to Green, a moment he hinted would be entertaining.
The finale also placed significant emphasis on the emotional farewell between Maggie and OA. Although Maggie understands the mission is a ruse, Weiss indicated that her reaction was entirely genuine, as OA will be out of reach for months while undercover.

“She is for real going to be separated from her partner,” Weiss remarked. “He’s going to be undercover. He’s going to be unreachable.”
The showrunner added that deep undercover assignments take a significant emotional toll, a theme the writers plan to explore in the upcoming season.
Season 9 will also delve into OA’s new relationship with Zara. Weiss mentioned that the bond between these two characters feels distinct from OA’s previous relationship with Gemma, as Zara comprehends both the job and OA on a deeper level.
“I think she’s going to be able to call him out and also be able to really appreciate who he is,” Weiss said.
The entire ‘FBI’ team will return next season. Scola will navigate married life and family concerns, Eva will strive to establish herself as a more seasoned agent, Jubal will continue leading the JOC, and Isobel will face pressures from higher-ups in a politically sensitive role.
