James Gunn Confirms ‘Lanterns’ Episode Runtimes — Each Chapter Will Be One Hour
TV enthusiasts are gaining a clearer understanding of what to anticipate from the upcoming superhero series ‘Lanterns’, particularly regarding its format and runtime.
A recent update from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn sheds light on the structure of the new series.
According to Gunn, each episode of ‘Lanterns’ will run for approximately one hour. He shared this detail while responding to a fan on Threads who questioned why the project is being developed as a series rather than a movie.
The fan inquired, “Why isn’t this a movie???” to which Gunn simply replied, “You want to sit through an eight hour movie?” This confirms that the project is intended as a full series instead of a single lengthy film.

‘Lanterns’ is an upcoming show in the DC Universe, created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King for HBO. It centers around Green Lantern characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart from DC Comics, following their investigation of a mysterious murder on Earth that leads them into a much larger and darker case.
This series is part of the new DCU under DC Studios, with Gunn and Peter Safran steering the franchise’s overall direction. It marks the third television series in this shared universe and is expected to play a crucial role in establishing the tone for future DC projects.
The main cast features Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. Kelly Macdonald also stars as Kerry, a local sheriff involved in the investigation, while Nathan Fillion portrays Guy Gardner, another Green Lantern known for his aggressive demeanor.
Originally developed in 2019 under Greg Berlanti, the series underwent reworking after Gunn and Safran took charge of DC Studios in 2022. The new iteration was officially announced in 2023, shifting towards a darker, detective-style narrative inspired by series like ‘True Detective’ and ‘Slow Horses’. HBO subsequently ordered the project, with filming taking place in Los Angeles in 2025.
Additional cast members include Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, and Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, among others. The storyline merges superhero action with elements of mystery and crime drama, setting it apart from traditional Green Lantern adaptations.
Scheduled to premiere on August 16, the series will consist of eight episodes in total. With Gunn confirming that each episode will be around one hour long, the entire season is designed to unfold like a long-form narrative rather than a condensed film.
Based on Gunn’s remarks and the creative direction outlined by DC Studios, ‘Lanterns’ is clearly being crafted as a slow-burn, detailed story. Rather than rushing the narrative into a movie format, the team is opting to expand it across multiple episodes to delve into both characters and the central mystery.
