Rhaenyra Targaryen finally claims the power she has fought for in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3, but Emma D’Arcy reveals that this moment is anything but a victory. Instead, it serves as a painful reminder of all that Rhaenyra has lost throughout her journey.

Following the events of Season 3 Episode 2, Rhaenyra takes charge of King’s Landing after making a heart-wrenching decision that alters her relationship with Alicent Hightower forever. Although she has ascended to the Iron Throne, the emotional toll of her actions leaves her deeply scarred.

In an interview discussing the episode, D’Arcy explained that Rhaenyra’s rise to power illustrates a character pushed to her limits. The actor aimed for Rhaenyra to lose the confidence and maturity she had developed over the years by the time she finally occupies the throne.

“I wanted Rhaenyra to be stripped of her adulthood by the time she reaches the throne,” D’Arcy stated.

One of the most impactful moments for Rhaenyra is her decision to execute Otto Hightower. Otto was not only Alicent’s father but also someone who had been a part of Rhaenyra’s life since childhood, having been close to her late father, King Viserys. For Rhaenyra, killing Otto transcends mere politics; it forces her to confront her past and the person she once was before war shattered her relationships.

D’Arcy elaborated that Rhaenyra struggles with this decision because Otto symbolizes a link to her childhood, complicating her ability to fully embrace her role as a ruler. “When someone has known you from your childhood, I think it’s very hard to retain the jacket of your adult self,” D’Arcy explained.

The actor emphasized that Rhaenyra’s encounter with Alicent after the execution is one of the episode’s most significant emotional moments. Alicent’s reaction compels Rhaenyra to see herself through the eyes of someone who remembers her before the war began.

“When she sees herself via Alicent’s POV, there’s something of the two of them being children,” D’Arcy noted. This scene reveals that despite their conflicts, Rhaenyra and Alicent share a profound connection. They are not merely adversaries vying for power; they are two individuals who grew up together and lost the friendship they once cherished.

However, D’Arcy believes that Rhaenyra’s choice may have inflicted irreparable damage on their relationship. “It’s probably immediately evident that Rhaenyra’s action is probably insurmountable in their relationship,” the actor said.

Olivia Cooke, who portrays Alicent, also shared her insights on the scene, explaining that Alicent perceives Otto’s death as a personal betrayal. From Alicent’s viewpoint, Rhaenyra’s initial act as ruler was to take away someone she loved.

The tragedy of this moment lies in the fact that both women believe they are acting in their best interests. Rhaenyra seeks to solidify her claim, while Alicent feels she is safeguarding her family.

For D’Arcy, the Iron Throne symbolizes not triumph for Rhaenyra, but rather a reminder of the sacrifices she has endured and the people she has lost.

After years of striving for the crown, Rhaenyra finally obtains what she desired. Yet, as Emma D’Arcy’s remarks indicate, becoming queen may have cost her the very essence of herself she was trying to protect all along.
