HBO has officially extended its overall deal with Ryan Condal, the co-creator and showrunner of ‘House of the Dragon’, ensuring his contract runs through 2029. This decision comes as the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel approaches its final stretch, with Condal set to oversee both Season 3 and the already-planned Season 4.

Condal first signed his overall deal with HBO in 2020 when ‘House of the Dragon’ was ordered straight to series. He co-created the show alongside George R. R. Martin, the author of the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ books that inspired ‘Game of Thrones’. Among several prequel concepts in development at that time, ‘House of the Dragon’ was the one that advanced into production.

Initially, he served as co-showrunner for Season 1 before taking full control of the series from Season 2 onward. With Season 3 currently in post-production and writers already working on the fourth and final season, Condal has been heavily involved in shaping the conclusion of the story.

HBO has already renewed ‘House of the Dragon’ through Season 4, even before Season 3 has premiered. The third season is set to debut on June 21, continuing the narrative that has become one of HBO’s biggest recent successes.

HBO executive Casey Bloys has previously expressed positive sentiments regarding Condal’s contributions to the series. In a conversation with Deadline, he praised the show’s performance and audience response, highlighting strong viewership numbers and favorable critical reception.

“This has been a very successful show for us,” Bloys said.

Since its debut in 2022, ‘House of the Dragon’ has emerged as HBO Max’s most-watched current series. Its premiere episode broke records for the platform, attracting nearly 10 million viewers on its opening night across streaming and broadcast. The series also won a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series and received major award nominations for its inaugural season. Season 2 maintained that momentum with impressive streaming numbers in its first week.

In addition to ‘House of the Dragon’, Condal is also involved in another ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off for HBO titled ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, further expanding his role within the franchise.

Before his tenure at HBO, Condal worked in both television and film. He co-created and ran the sci-fi series ‘Colony’ for three seasons on USA Network and also penned the screenplay for ‘Hercules’ starring Dwayne Johnson, in addition to co-writing the action film ‘Rampage’.

With this new deal extension, HBO is demonstrating strong confidence in Condal as it continues to develop the future of the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe, even as ‘House of the Dragon’ moves toward its planned conclusion.
