Netflix is gearing up to unveil a new three-part documentary series centered on the 2005 trial of Michael Jackson. Titled Michael Jackson: The Verdict, the series is set to premiere on June 3, revisiting one of the most scrutinized celebrity court cases in modern history.

This documentary revisits the 2003 child molestation charges against the pop icon, the highly publicized trial that ensued, and the intense media scrutiny surrounding the courtroom events. It offers insights from both the prosecution and defense perspectives, featuring individuals who were directly involved, including jurors, witnesses, accusers, and members of Jackson’s legal team.

According to the filmmakers, as reported by Netflix’s Tudum, the aim was to revisit the case in a more structured and factual manner. They stated, “It has been 20 years since the trial of Michael Jackson in which he was found not guilty. Yet, to this day, controversy still rages. No cameras were allowed in court, and so the public’s view of the facts at the time were filtered by commentators and presented piecemeal. It was time to take a forensic look at the trial as a whole.”

They also explained their intention to present firsthand accounts from individuals who were present during the trial. “The aim was to take the audience inside the proceedings and only speak to eyewitnesses who played a part in those events,” the filmmakers noted. They emphasized that the series is crafted to provide viewers with a clearer understanding of what transpired inside the courtroom.

Directed by Nick Green and executive produced by Fiona Stourton, the project is created by showrunner David Herman and also features executive production from James Goldston and Stourton. Production is managed by Candle True Stories.

The series delves into Jackson’s 2003 arrest and the child molestation allegations that led to the 2005 trial. It also examines how the case evolved into a global media phenomenon, with news coverage significantly influencing public perception at the time. Although Jackson was acquitted of all charges, the case has continued to be a topic of discussion long after his passing in 2009.

With the launch of Michael Jackson: The Verdict, Netflix seeks to revisit the trial in a more comprehensive and grounded format, emphasizing courtroom testimony and those who witnessed the proceedings firsthand.
