The series finale of ‘The Boys’ has ignited considerable conversation online after it premiered with a 6.7 rating on IMDb. This rating marks the lowest for any season finale throughout the show’s history, a surprising decline for a series that has consistently garnered strong critical and audience acclaim.

Previously, the show had maintained significantly higher ratings for its earlier season finales, making this outcome even more striking.

Reflecting on past seasons, the differences are evident. The Season 1 finale, “You Found Me,” boasted a rating of 9.1. The Season 2 finale, “What I Know,” achieved an impressive 9.4, one of the series’ highest points. Season 3 concluded with “The Instant White-Hot Wild,” earning a score of 8.3. Season 4, featuring the episode “Department of Dirty Tricks,” returned to a solid 9.1. In stark contrast, Season 5’s finale is significantly lower at 6.7.

Much of the online discourse has centered on the finale’s conclusion rather than the performances or production quality. Many fans voiced their disappointment regarding the trajectory of key character arcs in the final episode. The conversation has been particularly heated as ‘The Boys’ has built its reputation as a sharp, bold, and often unpredictable take on superhero narratives.

A significant point of contention is the resolution of Homelander’s storyline. For five seasons, he was portrayed as an almost invincible force. However, in the finale, he is stripped of his powers and ultimately killed by Billy Butcher. Some viewers felt this diminished the intensity of the final confrontation, as it removed the anticipated superpowered clash.

Another major focus is Billy Butcher’s final storyline. After killing Homelander, he attempts to unleash a virus aimed at eliminating all Supes, prompting Hughie to intervene by shooting him. Many fans believed this shift occurred too abruptly, lacking the emotional depth needed for such a significant decision.

Criticism also arose regarding the pacing of the finale. Although it runs just over an hour, some viewers felt it attempted to resolve too many plotlines simultaneously. Consequently, certain character arcs, including Starlight’s resistance movement and Ryan’s future, appeared rushed or only superficially addressed.

Some fans also noted that the ending took on a darker tone. Instead of a clear victory or hopeful resolution, the story concludes with loss on both sides. While this aligns with the show’s often cynical style, some viewers felt it undermined earlier themes of resistance, teamwork, and hope that were prevalent in prior seasons.

Despite the backlash, the finale provided a conclusion to a long-running narrative that has been developing since the inception of ‘The Boys’. It wrapped up the journeys of its main characters and resolved several long-standing conflicts, even if not everyone agreed with the manner in which those conclusions were reached.

The 6.7 IMDb score reflects a divided audience response rather than a straightforward evaluation. While some viewers appreciated the daring choices made, others felt the finale fell short of the high expectations set by earlier seasons.
