Zendaya Captivates as Athena in New Look at ‘The Odyssey’

A fresh glimpse of Zendaya as Athena in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film ‘The Odyssey’ is generating significant buzz online, as reported by ELLE.

The image features Zendaya embodying Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and war. This film is a high-budget adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic poem The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan and produced by Universal Pictures.

The narrative follows Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, on his quest to return home after the Trojan War. Throughout his arduous journey, he encounters perilous creatures, gods, and numerous challenges while striving to reunite with his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.

Zendaya’s portrayal of Athena is crucial as the goddess is known for guiding and protecting Odysseus throughout his journey. In mythology, Athena is a pivotal character who aids heroes and symbolizes intelligence and strategy.

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Tom Holland takes on the role of Telemachus, Odysseus’s son, while Robert Pattinson plays Antinous, one of the suitors in Ithaca. Lupita Nyong’o portrays a dual role as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, and Charlize Theron plays the nymph Calypso.

Development of the project began in 2024 when Nolan started writing the script. He later secured the film with Universal Pictures and officially commenced production. Casting continued through late 2024 and early 2025, confirming Matt Damon as the lead.

Filming occurred across various countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Malta, alongside studio work in Los Angeles. Reports indicate the budget is approximately $250 million, making it one of the most expensive films of Nolan’s career.

This movie is also significant for being filmed entirely on IMAX 70 mm film, contributing to its grand production style.

Nolan has expressed his desire for the film to feel grounded and realistic, despite its roots in Greek mythology. He has drawn inspiration from Emily Wilson’s modern translation of The Odyssey and classic mythological films.

According to ELLE, the new image of Zendaya as Athena has heightened anticipation for the film, which is set for theatrical release on July 17, in IMAX cinemas across the United States.

With its extensive cast, massive production scale, and well-known mythological narrative, The Odyssey is already one of the most awaited films of 2026.
