‘Echo Valley’ Star Julianne Moore Collaborates With Barack and Michelle Obama on New Film
Julianne Moore is taking on a lighter role in an upcoming Netflix comedy film, collaborating with Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, as reported by industry sources involved with the project.
The film, which remains untitled, is characterized as a multi-generational comedy reminiscent of Crazy, Stupid, Love. In this film, Julianne Moore portrays a mother whose life spirals into chaos when her daughter receives a job promotion that would relocate her far away.
Instead of accepting this change, the mother panics and embarks on a mission to prevent it. Her over-the-top plan involves finding the ideal romantic partner for her daughter, all in an effort to keep her close.
The narrative is structured as an ensemble piece, with Moore confirmed in one of the lead roles. Casting for the remaining three main characters is still in progress, indicating that the film will explore several interconnected storylines rather than focusing solely on a single lead perspective.
The screenplay is penned by Maggie Sheridan, who previously served as an executive story editor for the third season of Loot, the Apple TV+ comedy featuring Maya Rudolph. Sheridan has also collaborated with writer and producer Alan Yang on Master of None, bringing her expertise in character-driven comedy to this project.
Produced by Higher Ground, the company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, this film is part of their ongoing first-look deal with Netflix. Anikah McLaren is producing alongside Julianne Moore, who is also on board as an executive producer. This project continues the Obamas’ expanding collaboration with Netflix, which includes upcoming titles like All the Sinners Bleed and The Altruists.
According to Netflix’s recent development slate, the streaming service has been actively investing in high-concept romantic comedies. Other projects in development include a culture-clash romance featuring Blackpink’s Lisa, a body-swap comedy reminiscent of 13 Going on 30 starring Emily Bader, and a Berlanti/Schechter project described as a blend of Legally Blonde and War of the Roses.
Julianne Moore’s recent work has predominantly featured dramatic and critically acclaimed roles, including May December, The Room Next Door, and Echo Valley. She is also set to appear in upcoming projects such as The Debut from A24 and Tom Ford’s next feature Cry to Heaven. This new Netflix comedy represents a significant shift in tone for the actress as she explores more comedic avenues while continuing her role as a producer.
