Eric Kripke has opened up about the emotional challenges of concluding The Boys, revealing that the character he found hardest to say goodbye to was surprisingly not one of the main heroes or significant emotional figures. Instead, it was The Deep.

In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, the seasoned showrunner reflected on wrapping up the acclaimed superhero series and noted that Kevin Moskowitz, better known as The Deep, evolved into one of the most entertaining characters for the writers due to his absurdity and cluelessness.

“The Deep is hard to say goodbye to. He’s just so stupid. Writing stupid is so fun,” Kripke expressed. “And his death is as absurd and ridiculous as his life. And I think people will really, really enjoy that.”

Kripke further explained that while he felt a deeper emotional connection to other characters, The Deep consistently brought a unique energy to the writers’ room.

“There’s obviously characters I’m way more connected to emotionally,” he added. “But with the way Chase played him, the closest we ever got in the writers room to just playing was whenever we were working on The Deep.”

The character, portrayed by Chace Crawford, spent five seasons becoming one of the most eccentric and chaotic figures in the series. While many characters in The Boys faced dark emotional arcs or brutal violence, The Deep often provided awkward comedy, bizarre interactions with sea creatures, and some of the show’s most uncomfortable moments. His final scene in the series finale fully embraced that madness.

In the last episode of Season 5, titled Blood and Bone, The Deep meets a violent and ironic fate after years of betraying the marine life he professed to care about. His downfall begins earlier in the season after a confrontation with Black Noir II leads to a catastrophic oil pipeline explosion in Alaska, reportedly killing over 1.4 billion fish and completely severing any relationship The Deep had with the ocean.

Later in the season, his hammerhead shark companion Xander warns him that sea creatures have officially turned against him. The message is clear: if he ever returns to the ocean, he will face dire consequences.

That warning becomes a reality during the series’ final battle.

In a confrontation at the White House, Annie January, also known as Starlight, battles The Deep and ultimately blasts him directly into the ocean using her powers. As soon as he hits the water, sea creatures swarm him from all sides.

Before he can escape, a giant squid attacks and kills him in a brutal manner. Just before the fatal moment, one of the marine animals cries out, “Justice for Ambrosius!”

This line references Ambrosius, the octopus voiced by Tilda Swinton that The Deep claimed to love in Season 4 before ultimately killing her himself.

The scene concludes with Starlight watching in disbelief as the ocean itself becomes The Deep’s executioner.

For fans of The Boys, this death felt like a fitting conclusion for a character who spent years wreaking havoc while refusing to accept responsibility for his actions. Even Kripke acknowledged that the absurdity of the moment perfectly matched the character.

After years of bizarre behavior, embarrassing failures, and relentless chaos, The Deep’s story concluded in the most outrageous way possible, just as fans of the show likely anticipated.
