Shailene Woodley is keeping the door open for a return to the ‘Divergent’ universe. Following the announcement by author Veronica Roth of a new book titled ‘The Sixth Faction’, fans have begun speculating about a potential revival of the franchise on the big screen. Woodley has now shared her insights on the possibility of reprising her role as Tris, years after the original films concluded.

In an interview with Variety, Woodley expressed her genuine interest in exploring another film linked to the ‘Divergent’ series. She humorously mentioned the idea of returning later in life, stating, “Maybe we’ll do it when I’m in my 40s.” The actress also playfully considered the notion of Tris returning as a mother, indicating her enduring affection for the character even after all this time.

Woodley conveyed her excitement upon learning that Roth had penned another book within the ‘Divergent’ world. Although she has yet to read ‘The Sixth Faction’, she is pleased to see the franchise continuing in some capacity. During the conversation, she reflected on Tris’ journey and the conclusion from the original books, saying, “I think it would be fun to explore what a fourth film could be,” showcasing her enthusiasm for the character’s story.

The actress also discussed a particular aspect of the original narrative that she found intriguing as a performer. “Tris dies. That’s the plot point. I think it’s cool when a protagonist, when their world ends,” Woodley explained, highlighting her appreciation for the emotional depth and drama of the character she portrayed throughout the film series.

However, there is a significant twist regarding ‘The Sixth Faction’. This new book is not a direct sequel to the original trilogy; instead, it is described as an alternate-universe tale where Tris makes a different faction choice. This means the story could still revolve around Tris, but in a vastly different timeline and setting compared to the films fans are familiar with.

Despite Woodley’s interest, a new ‘Divergent’ film is still far from being confirmed. Currently, there are no official plans for a film adaptation of ‘The Sixth Faction’. The franchise has had a tumultuous history in Hollywood. The first ‘Divergent’ movie was a box office success, grossing nearly $289 million worldwide, and its sequel performed even better. However, things took a downturn with ‘Allegiant’ in 2016, which underperformed and disappointed the studio.

Due to that disappointing box office performance, Lionsgate scrapped the planned final film that was meant to conclude the story. Fans were left without a proper resolution to the film series, and the franchise gradually faded from the spotlight.

Nevertheless, some fans believe ‘The Sixth Faction’ could provide the series with a fresh start. Since it presents an alternate version of the story, it could serve almost as a reboot for a new audience. At the same time, long-time fans would likely still wish to see Woodley involved in some capacity, as many continue to associate her closely with Tris.

For now, nothing is set in stone. However, Woodley’s remarks have certainly ignited renewed excitement among ‘Divergent’ fans who have always hoped for the franchise’s return.
