New ‘Masters of the Universe’ Animated Reboot Set for June Release Date
Animated franchises often experience lengthy breaks before being revitalized, particularly when studios opt to modernize them. In recent years, numerous classic cartoon properties have made a comeback through reboots, streaming initiatives, and expanded universes designed to engage both longtime fans and new audiences.
This trend continues with ‘Masters of the Universe’, as Mattel expands the brand with fresh animated content linked to its forthcoming live-action projects and a broader storytelling strategy.
According to The Toy Book magazine and a post shared on X, Mattel has officially announced a new animated reboot of the franchise, set to debut in June. This initiative is part of what the company refers to as a long-term “MOTU roadmap,” which encompasses various formats and releases across multiple platforms.
The series is anticipated to launch on June 10 exclusively on YouTube. This marks another significant step in the ongoing revival of the franchise, which has remained active in various forms over the years, including recent animated projects released between 2021 and 2024 on Netflix, developed by Kevin Smith.
The new animated reboot is being crafted by writer and director Matthew Brown, who recently shared insights about the project on Instagram, confirming his involvement and the release date. He stated, “At last, I can speak about what I’ve been working on for the last 6 months: a new animated reboot of ‘Masters of the Universe’ for Mattel. Launches June 10th exclusively on YouTube.”
Early reports and industry speculation indicate that the show may adopt a short-form format, possibly releasing multiple episodes in quick succession. Brown’s LinkedIn profile refers to the project as Masters of the Universe: Tales from Eternia and suggests a planned run of around 20 episodes.
While the story direction remains somewhat unclear, it is anticipated to tie into the broader expansion of the franchise rather than operate as a completely standalone narrative. Mattel is focusing on creating a connected universe across various media, including film, animation, and publishing.
Nick Karamanos, Senior Vice President of Entertainment Partnerships at Mattel, discussed the company’s plans for the franchise with The Toy Book. He stated, “For us, it’s about the totality of the property and how we keep it going for kids. That’s a huge part of the plan.”
He also mentioned how the upcoming live-action film directed by Travis Knight could renew interest in the franchise. He predicted, “My prediction is that the original series is going to be the next retro title to have its time in the sun once again.”
‘Masters of the Universe’ has a rich history, originating as a toy line and evolving into a significant animated series in the 1980s. It has undergone multiple adaptations over the years, including previous animated revivals and streaming projects, with iconic characters like He-Man and Skeletor remaining central to the brand’s identity.
While details about the new reboot’s plot are still scarce, it is expected to align with the broader franchise strategy that includes upcoming films, tie-in stories, and expanded universe content. A novel tie-in is also in the works, exploring aspects of Eternia related to the upcoming live-action film.
For now, the confirmed June release provides fans with a clear date for the animated segment of the franchise. With both film and animation projects progressing, Mattel is clearly positioning ‘Masters of the Universe’ for a comprehensive revival across various platforms.
