The Infamous ‘Obsession’ Scene That Got Trimmed May Return in Director’s Cut
The horror film Obsession, directed by Curry Barker, continues to capture attention for a particular moment that has become infamous among fans.
At first glance, Obsession may seem like an unusual romantic thriller with a supernatural twist. However, viewers soon realize it delves into much darker themes. The film fully embraces horror, showcasing intense violence and disturbing scenes. Barker, who also wrote and edited the film, made a deliberate choice to push the narrative into extreme territory rather than play it safe.
One scene, in particular, has sparked significant online discussion. In this moment, the character Nikki, portrayed by Inde Navarrette, violently attacks another woman outside a car window.
She breaks through the glass, seizes the victim, and brutally slams her head into the steering wheel multiple times in a shocking sequence. This graphic scene has been labeled one of the most shocking moments in the film. According to Barker, the original version of this moment was even longer but had to be shortened to avoid an NC-17 rating.
Even in its theatrical cut, the scene remains incredibly intense. Fans have described it as one of the most extreme horror moments in recent memory. Consequently, the sequence has taken on a life of its own online, with horror enthusiasts dubbing it a “lost” moment, as they believe the full version shot by Barker has yet to be seen.
Curry Barker has acknowledged that additional footage from the film did not make the final cut. In an interview with Popternative, he discussed the potential of revisiting this material in the future.
He stated, “I would love to do a director’s cut of this just because there’s so many things that are not in the movie. That would be really fun. But it would literally be a project for me. I would have to set aside some time to really dive into the footage again. It would have to be something that Focus [Features] really wants and I would be like, ‘Yes, let’s do it.’”
Barker’s comments have heightened interest in the possibility of an extended version. Fans are particularly eager to see the original cut of the head smash scene, which has become the most discussed moment in the film. Many believe that a full director’s cut would likely restore more of the intensity that was trimmed for theaters.
The success of Obsession has made the idea of a director’s cut more plausible. The film has reportedly grossed over 74 million dollars worldwide after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2025, in the Midnight Madness section. It later hit U.S. theaters on May 15, 2026, through Focus Features.

The narrative follows Bear, played by Michael Johnston, a young man who discovers a supernatural object that grants wishes. When he uses it to make his childhood friend Nikki love him, chaos ensues. The cast also features Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter.
With its strong box office performance and increasing fan interest, discussions about a director’s cut are gaining momentum. While Barker has yet to confirm anything, his remarks suggest that more footage could eventually be revealed if the opportunity arises.
