The creators of ‘Hacks’ are exploring the possibility of a physical media release to ensure the show’s long-term accessibility. This conversation emerged during an interview with Deadline, where Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky shared their thoughts on the series’ future amidst the evolving landscape of Hollywood.

The team expressed interest in producing a complete DVD box set following the conclusion of the show’s final season. They highlighted their concerns regarding streaming platforms and the rapid disappearance of content due to corporate shifts, mergers, and licensing decisions. Aniello noted the unpredictability fans face when trying to revisit beloved shows.

She remarked, “It’s such an important time for people to invest in physical media because you’re right, things are coming down all the time and it’s like, ‘Oh, I love that movie, I want to see it.’ You just can’t, babe, it doesn’t exist.”

Aniello further explained that this issue extends beyond mere convenience, touching on the control over creative works. She pointed out that the availability of content can hinge on algorithms or business decisions rather than audience preferences. She cautioned that this could escalate as companies continue to merge and consolidate.

She stated, “That does really put so much power of the distribution of art in the hands of algorithms and people’s whims and certain executives not liking somebody’s brother, so they take down their movie or show or whatever. It is really scary, the idea of censorship, especially as more and more companies are bought up by other companies.”

The creators also hope to include additional content in the DVD box set, such as deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes features. Their aim is to provide fans with a permanent collection that does not rely on the continued availability of streaming services.

Aniello clarified that while they are working towards this plan, it is not yet officially confirmed. She emphasized the importance of preserving the show in a physical format.

She said, “We’re really hoping to make a Hacks DVD box set, for one. We’re trying to make that happen. That’s an exclusive. Please go buy it, not because we make any money off of it. We just want to make sure the show stays in existence for as long as DVD players exist.”

She acknowledged that the current landscape of streaming and media ownership can feel uncertain and disheartening. Nonetheless, she suggested that community support from fans could help sustain interest in physical releases.

‘Hacks’, which debuted in 2021, delves into the complex professional relationship between stand-up comedian Deborah Vance and young comedy writer Ava Daniels. The series has garnered significant critical acclaim and multiple awards, establishing itself as one of the standout comedy dramas on HBO Max.

As ‘Hacks’ enters its final season, discussions about its long-term preservation become increasingly pertinent for both its creators and its audience.
