Robert Eggers’ Latest Horror Film ‘Werwulf’ Trailer Features Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Willem Dafoe
Robert Eggers is plunging audiences back into darkness with his latest horror venture, ‘Werwulf’, and the first official trailer has finally been unveiled. This upcoming film unites Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, and Lily-Rose Depp for another unsettling historical nightmare from the acclaimed director known for ‘The Witch’, ‘The Lighthouse’, ‘The Northman’, and ‘Nosferatu’.
While Focus Features has yet to provide a complete plot summary, the film is described with the chilling tagline: “Werwulf is a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation, and the devil within.” This brief description hints at a narrative filled with fear, family secrets, and a dark force that clings to its victims.
The new trailer showcases Eggers’ signature style. Shot in a grainy 4:3 format, the footage evokes an old-fashioned and unsettling atmosphere, making the world of ‘Werwulf’ feel like something drawn from a forgotten nightmare. The trailer centers on a family grappling with a mysterious curse, accompanied by a haunting voice warning of the evil that has pursued them.
As the trailer unfolds, the peril becomes more apparent. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character seems to be at the heart of the curse, and the final moments reveal a startling transformation as he morphs into a werewolf. This brief glimpse has already ignited excitement among horror enthusiasts eager to see Eggers’ distinctive interpretation of the classic monster tale.
‘Werwulf’ continues Eggers’ fascination with historical horror. Rather than modern settings, the filmmaker once again constructs a world rooted in the past, intertwining folklore, mythology, and raw human emotions. His previous works have delved into witches, sailors, Vikings, and vampires, and now he shifts his focus to werewolf legends.
The film also reunites Eggers with several actors he has collaborated with previously. Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe all starred in Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’, which achieved both critical and commercial acclaim. Reports indicate that ‘Nosferatu’ grossed approximately $181 million worldwide, marking Eggers’ biggest box office success.
The success of ‘Nosferatu’ has further solidified Eggers’ partnership with Focus Features. The vampire film debuted with $21.6 million in its opening weekend and reached $40.8 million within its first five days. It later garnered multiple major award nominations, including recognition from the BAFTAs and the Oscars.
With ‘Werwulf’, Eggers appears poised to continue his streak of visually striking and disturbing films. The project was co-written by Eggers and his longtime collaborator Sjón, who previously worked with him on ‘The Northman’. Focus Features is producing the film alongside Eggers and Sjón, with Chris and Eleanor Columbus from Maiden Voyage serving as executive producers.
While the studio is keeping many story details under wraps, the trailer provides enough intrigue to assure fans that another dark journey is on the horizon. With the mysterious curse, an impressive cast, and Eggers’ reputation for crafting intense horror experiences, ‘Werwulf’ is already becoming one of the most anticipated genre films.
The movie is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day, continuing Eggers’ tradition of delivering unusual and ambitious horror stories to the big screen.
