‘Obsession’ is a supernatural horror film crafted by Curry Barker, who took on the roles of writer, director, and editor. The film surprised audiences and critics alike with its strong reviews and impressive box office performance after its release. It weaves a disturbing tale of love, wishes, and their consequences, all set against a dark horror backdrop.

The narrative centers on Bear, a young man portrayed by Michael Johnston, who works in a music store and harbors deep feelings for his childhood friend Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. Too shy to confess his emotions, Bear purchases a peculiar supernatural toy known as the One Wish Willow, which is said to grant a single wish. He uses it in hopes of making Nikki fall in love with him.

Despite the film’s success, Barker has candidly discussed a particular aspect of the story that he believes lacks coherence. In an interview with Total Film, he acknowledged that the premise of the One Wish Willow introduces a logical inconsistency within the film’s universe.

He stated, “I mean, it’s kind of a plot hole. It’s something I don’t like to think about too much, because it totally doesn’t make sense that there’s a world of people just making wishes.” Barker further noted that if the toy functioned as described, the film’s world would be drastically different. He remarked, “It really doesn’t make any sense at all. If the One Wish Willow actually works, which it does in this lore, and people are just making wishes left and right, there would be some crazy — like, dragons would exist.”

The director added that the film’s world appears normal, raising further questions about the mechanics of the wish system.

Later, Barker proposed a potential resolution to the inconsistency. He suggested that each wish might create an alternate reality where only that specific wish is realized. This concept could prevent chaos from multiple wishes impacting the same world simultaneously.

Initially, this notion seems like a straightforward fantasy, but the wish leads to severe and horrifying repercussions. The film blends romance with psychological horror, illustrating the dangers of altering reality for personal gain.

‘Obsession’ premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2025, in the Midnight Madness section. It was subsequently released in U.S. theaters on May 15 by Focus Features. The film performed remarkably well at the box office, grossing approximately 75 to 79 million dollars worldwide, according to industry reports and box office tracking.

Critics responded positively, with ‘Obsession’ holding a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes from over 150 reviews. The site’s consensus describes it as a disturbing yet entertaining horror film that elevates a simple premise into something more intense. Metacritic awarded it a score of 77 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews. Audiences also reacted positively, giving it a CinemaScore grade of A–.

Despite this minor inconsistency, Barker has expressed interest in further developing the story. He indicated a willingness to create a sequel or even an anthology series exploring various wishes and narratives.

‘Obsession’ stands out as a successful horror film, showcasing how even well-received stories can contain elements that provoke questions, even for their creators.
