Hugh Jackman Discusses the Legend of Robin Hood Before ‘The Death of Robin Hood’ Release
A new video featuring Hugh Jackman has been unveiled, showcasing him discussing the story of Robin Hood in anticipation of his upcoming film ‘The Death of Robin Hood.’
This video serves as an exclusive promotional piece linked to the movie’s marketing campaign.
In the video, Jackman revisits the rich history of the Robin Hood legend, setting the stage for the darker interpretation that will be featured in the new film. Described as a thriller, the movie offers a fresh take on the classic 17th-century ballad ‘Robin Hood’s Death,’ presenting an older Robin Hood grappling with the repercussions of his violent past.
‘The Death of Robin Hood’ is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski. The film stars Hugh Jackman in the lead role, alongside Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe in significant roles. The narrative follows an aging Robin Hood who suffers severe injuries and finds himself in an unusual situation involving a mysterious woman. As he recovers, he must confront the actions of his life as an outlaw.
Jackman portrays a version of Robin Hood that diverges from the typical heroic archetype. This character is older, more damaged, and burdened by guilt. Jodie Comer plays Sister Brigid, a character integral to his journey. Bill Skarsgård takes on the role of Little John, reimagined in a darker and more nuanced manner than in traditional portrayals. Murray Bartlett plays a character known as The Leper, while Noah Jupe plays Arthur, also referred to as Godwyn.
The film was officially announced in 2024, confirming Michael Sarnoski as the director and writer. Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer were attached as lead actors from the outset. Shortly thereafter, A24 secured the distribution rights for the film in the United States during a competitive deal at the Marché du Film, a significant film industry market.
In early 2025, additional cast members joined the project, including Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe. Filming commenced in February 2025 in Northern Ireland, with production taking place at Belfast Harbour Studios and various outdoor locations such as Silent Valley, Glenarm, and Murlough Bay. Post-production was completed in Holywood, County Down, and filming wrapped up in late March 2025. The movie was also shot on 35mm film, lending it a more classic cinematic aesthetic.
The release schedule for the film is already in place. ‘The Death of Robin Hood’ will premiere at the 73rd Sydney Film Festival on June 12, followed by its release in the United States on June 19, distributed by A24. The film is anticipated to hit theaters worldwide around the same timeframe.
This story presents a darker interpretation of the Robin Hood legend, shifting the focus from adventure and heroism to themes of aging, guilt, and survival. Robin Hood is no longer the youthful outlaw of folklore but a man confronting the consequences of his past actions.
With Hugh Jackman at the helm and Michael Sarnoski directing, the project is being framed as a serious and emotionally charged take on a well-known narrative. The promotional video provides early insight into the film’s tone and heightens anticipation ahead of its release next year.
