New Preview of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ Sparks Fan Excitement
A fresh preview of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has been unveiled by Rotten Tomatoes, generating buzz among fans for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series.
This series represents a complete reimagining of J. K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter books, developed for HBO in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films. It is designed as a long-term project that will adapt the entire book series across multiple seasons, starting with the first season dedicated to Philosopher’s Stone.
Set to premiere on December 25, the series will air on HBO in the United States and on HBO Max worldwide. The inaugural season will consist of eight episodes, closely following the narrative of the original novel. It has already been confirmed for a second season, which will delve into Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The series features an entirely new cast for the main trio. Dominic McLaughlin takes on the role of Harry Potter, a young boy who learns he is a wizard after a challenging childhood with the Dursleys. Alastair Stout portrays Ron Weasley, Harry’s devoted best friend from the Weasley family. Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger, an exceptionally bright Muggle-born witch who quickly becomes integral to the trio. Stanton is also set to voice a younger version of Hermione in forthcoming audiobook adaptations.
The adult cast includes notable actors in pivotal Hogwarts roles. John Lithgow portrays Albus Dumbledore, the wise headmaster of Hogwarts. Janet McTeer appears as Professor McGonagall, while Paapa Essiedu takes on the character of Severus Snape. Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid, the Hogwarts groundskeeper who introduces Harry to the magical realm.
Supporting characters include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, and Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan. Additional students from Gryffindor and Slytherin contribute to the ensemble, enhancing the depiction of Hogwarts’ school environment. Warwick Davis also reprises his role as Professor Flitwick from the earlier film series.
The narrative follows Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, where he forges strong friendships with Ron and Hermione while uncovering details about his past and the looming threat of Lord Voldemort. The series highlights their early adventures and the mysteries of the wizarding world.
Production updates indicate that development on the series commenced in 2021, with casting efforts ramping up in 2024. Following a global casting search, the three lead actors were officially chosen in 2025. Filming began in July 2025 at Leavesden Studios in England.
The creative team is spearheaded by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, aiming to produce a faithful and comprehensive adaptation of the original books. The series is envisioned as a long-term project, intending to expand each book into its own season and delve deeper into the story than previous adaptations.
With the new preview released by Rotten Tomatoes, excitement continues to grow as fans catch their first glimpses of this fresh take on Hogwarts and its characters ahead of its holiday premiere.
