Disney Unveils Final Trailer for ‘Toy Story 5’ Before Release Date
The final trailer for Toy Story 5 has officially dropped, offering fans an exciting glimpse of Pixar’s upcoming animated sequel set to hit theaters on June 19.
This installment continues the narrative following Toy Story 4, where Woody chose to leave Bonnie’s room to assist Bo Peep in helping lost toys find new owners. The spotlight now shifts more prominently to Jessie and Buzz Lightyear, who are taking charge of the toys in Bonnie’s room. However, the dynamics change when Bonnie becomes enamored with a new favorite item, Lilypad, a frog-shaped tablet that diverts her attention from traditional toys.
Pixar aims to delve into how children engage with technology today through this film. According to insights from the filmmakers, Toy Story 5 addresses the increasing influence of screens and digital entertainment in childhood. Director Andrew Stanton explained that the film confronts a challenging reality for the toys, describing it as “a realization of an existential problem: that nobody’s really playing with toys anymore.”
The narrative places beloved Toy Story characters in a scenario where they increasingly feel overlooked as technology dominates playtime. Jessie even confesses in the film that she feels they are “losing Bonnie to this device.” This emotional struggle becomes a central theme as the toys fight to maintain their significance in Bonnie’s life.
The cast features many familiar voices from previous films. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Woody, while Tim Allen returns as Buzz Lightyear. Joan Cusack is back as Jessie, alongside Tony Hale as Forky, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, Wallace Shawn as Rex, John Ratzenberger as Hamm, Blake Clark as Slinky Dog, and Kristen Schaal as Trixie. Keanu Reeves also returns as Duke Caboom.
New voices are joining the franchise as well. Greta Lee voices Lilypad, the tablet-like toy that captures Bonnie’s attention. Conan O’Brien lends his voice to a new character named Smarty Pants, while Craig Robinson voices Atlas, a talking GPS hippo toy. Additional newcomers include Mykal-Michelle Harris, Matty Matheson, Ernie Hudson, Alan Cumming, and Wyatt Russell.
Development on the film officially commenced after Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed in 2023 that another Toy Story movie was in active production. Although Toy Story 4 was initially viewed as a potential conclusion for the series, Pixar ultimately opted to continue the franchise in a new direction. This film is particularly significant as it marks the first main Toy Story installment produced without direct involvement from franchise co-creator John Lasseter, who departed Pixar in 2018.
Andrew Stanton, who contributed to previous Toy Story films and directed classics like Finding Nemo and WALL-E, is at the helm of this project. The screenplay was crafted by Stanton and Kenna Harris, with Pixar veteran Randy Newman returning to compose the film’s score.
The final trailer showcases emotional moments, humor, and the escalating tension between traditional toys and modern technology. It also teases larger adventures featuring multiple Buzz Lightyear units and new characters entering Bonnie’s universe.
With the release date fast approaching, Toy Story 5 is poised to be one of Pixar’s most significant theatrical releases in years, bringing Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang back for another heartfelt story.
