Mark Duplass Defends Kane Parsons Against Claims of Ghost-Directing ‘Backrooms’
Mark Duplass has firmly addressed online claims suggesting that Kane Parsons was not entirely responsible for directing ‘Backrooms.’ This film marks Parsons’ feature-length directorial debut and has sparked considerable online debate. Duplass dismissed the notion that anyone else was secretly directing on set.
He confronted the rumor directly, stating, “I don’t remember seeing you on set. When I was there, Kane was 100% in control. More so than many directors 3x his age.” His remarks were aimed at countering speculation that Parsons had outside assistance during the film’s direction.
Duplass elaborated on his involvement in the film, explaining that he often collaborates with emerging filmmakers and mentors new talent. Initially, he anticipated providing more support during production, but he soon realized that it was unnecessary. He remarked, “I suspect one of the reasons I was hired was because I mentor a lot of young filmmakers … and I was prepared to help out … [but] he didn’t need any of us.”
According to Duplass, Parsons was thoroughly prepared and engaged in every aspect of the production. He described the young director as focused and exceptionally organized, even with such a large and intricate project. Duplass noted, “He was intensely prepared. He spent the last five years of his life building out one of the most detailed mythologies I’ve ever been a part of … and was very sensitive, calm, and smart with dealing with actors.”

He concluded his remarks by challenging the online speculation, stating, “For all of you who have these thoughts… were you there?” His response clearly indicated his belief that Parsons was fully in charge during the film’s production.
‘Backrooms’ is an upcoming science fiction horror film inspired by the viral creepypasta and the web series created by Kane Parsons on his YouTube channel, Kane Pixels. The narrative delves into a surreal and unsettling universe that gained traction online through short horror videos. The film aims to expand that concept into a full cinematic experience.
Directed by Parsons and penned by Will Soodik, the film is produced by notable companies including A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps Entertainment. This project has garnered attention due to Parsons making his feature debut at a remarkably young age, positioning him as one of the youngest directors to collaborate with A24.
The cast features Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. The film is set for theatrical release on May 29, 2026.
Development of ‘Backrooms’ commenced after Parsons captured attention in 2022 with his original YouTube horror series. The project swiftly evolved into a major studio film following its online popularity. Producers James Wan, Shawn Levy, and Osgood Perkins are also involved, lending additional industry credibility to the production.
Casting continued throughout 2025, with several prominent actors joining the project as it approached production. Despite early rumors and speculation surrounding the film’s internet origins, the creative team has consistently emphasized Parsons’ pivotal role in shaping the story and directing the project.
Duplass’ remarks reinforce this narrative, portraying Parsons as a hands-on director with a distinct vision, even within the context of a large-scale studio production.
