Marvel has unveiled the first trailer for X-Men ’97 Season 2, confirming what fans have eagerly anticipated: Apocalypse is set to take center stage. The newly released footage indicates that the animated series will return to Disney+ on July 1, diving into one of the most significant and bizarre narratives yet.

This season picks up after the tumultuous conclusion of Season 1, where the X-Men find themselves scattered across various points in time. Some members are trapped in ancient Egypt during Apocalypse’s rise, while others are thrown thousands of years into the future.

The trailer prominently features En Sabah Nur, the mutant destined to become Apocalypse. Executive producer Larry Houston shared that this season will delve deeper into the character’s origins. He told Entertainment Weekly, “Ancient Egypt Apocalypse gives us this massively powerful mutant backstory.” He further remarked, “No one is born evil, but we see how circumstances led him to become the villainous Apocalypse.”

The narrative appears to expand beyond a typical superhero conflict. Xavier, Magneto, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler are stuck in Egypt around 3,000 B.C., while Cyclops and Jean Grey find themselves in the distant future, specifically the year 3960. The trailer hints at epic battles, unusual timelines, and various incarnations of Apocalypse throughout history.

Meanwhile, Bishop and Forge remain in the main timeline, working to reunite the team before Apocalypse strikes when the X-Men are at their most vulnerable.

The footage also suggests significant emotional repercussions from Gambit’s death in Season 1. Fans have speculated that Apocalypse may have ties to Gambit’s future, especially after the finale hinted at the villain looming over Gambit’s death site while clutching one of his playing cards.

Houston confirmed that Gambit’s death will significantly impact the story moving forward. He stated, “The death of Gambit looms greatly over season 2.” He added that Rogue is still deeply affected by the events and that the writers recognize her importance to longtime fans.

While the producers refrained from directly confirming comic storylines related to Gambit and Apocalypse, they hinted that fans are on the right track. Producer Julia Lewald noted, “We probably don’t wanna get too close to answering that specifically, but appreciate that a lot of folks are picking up breadcrumbs.” Eric Lewald added, “If you were a betting man, I would say, follow the breadcrumbs.”

The trailer also showcases several new characters and teams, including Psylocke, Colossus, Polaris, Archangel, and X-Force. Houston hinted that Polaris will play a significant role this season, with her storyline impacting both the X-Men and X-Force.

Marvel appears confident about the series’ future, with Larry Houston revealing that the studio is already hard at work on upcoming episodes and aims to release new seasons more quickly. He explained, “It’s gonna be a year until the next one and a year until the next one after that.”

With Apocalypse finally making his entrance and multiple timelines converging, Season 2 is poised to elevate X-Men ’97 to even greater heights.
