The first official look at ‘In the Hand of Dante’ has been released, showcasing the latest historical drama from director Julian Schnabel. This film initially premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is set for a wider release on Netflix.

The movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese, Sabrina Impacciatore, Franco Nero, and many others. It marks one of Schnabel’s most significant projects since his 2018 film At Eternity’s Gate.

Central to the narrative is Oscar Isaac, who portrays two distinct characters: Nick Tosches, a contemporary writer from New York, and Dante Alighieri, the renowned 14th-century Italian poet. The film navigates between these two timelines, revealing how their lives intersect in unexpected ways.

The plot follows Tosches as he embarks on a perilous mission involving a mafia boss who seeks a legendary handwritten edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Simultaneously, the story explores Dante’s quest to finalize his masterpiece centuries earlier. Both narratives intertwine through themes of obsession, power, and the quest for meaning.

According to the official synopsis, “In the Hand of Dante follows the parallel lives of a New York author (Nick Tosches) in the 21st century who embarks on a violent journey after he is recruited by a mafia don to steal Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy written in the poet’s own hand, and Dante in the 14th century seeking inspiration to write his most important work.”

The film employs various stylistic choices, utilizing color sequences for the historical narrative and black-and-white visuals for the modern storyline. This contrast effectively highlights the differences between artistic history and the more tumultuous contemporary world.

The production of this film has been a lengthy endeavor. The rights to the novel were acquired in 2008, and multiple iterations of the project were developed over the years before Schnabel finally brought it to fruition. Filming primarily took place in Italy, with additional scenes shot in various locations.

The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2025, where it was screened out of competition. It is scheduled for theatrical release on June 12, 2026, followed by a streaming debut on Netflix on June 24, 2026.

Initial reactions have been mixed. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes indicates a divided critical response, with some praising its ambition while others criticize its complex and at times uneven storytelling.
