‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set to be a significant reset for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stating that the film will bring the character closer to his classic comic book origins.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Feige shared that this is the first Spider-Man movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe to fully embrace the traditional “Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man” that fans recognize from the comics. He noted that the focus shifts away from major crossover events and mentor figures, centering instead on Peter’s daily life in New York and the solitary challenges of being a street-level hero.

“It is the first Spider-Man film that we’ve made in the MCU that is focused on the classic elements of Spider-Man,” Feige remarked. He continued, “He’s doing the Spidey thing of living in a rather sad, small apartment, listening to the police scanner and going out and using his great power responsibly.”

The film picks up after the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, where Doctor Strange’s spell caused the world to forget Peter Parker entirely. This leaves him isolated, with no friends who remember him, including MJ and Ned. He is now completely on his own in New York City, attempting to rebuild his life while still protecting the city as Spider-Man.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton, in the same report via Empire, mentioned that this version of Peter is profoundly influenced by loss and emotional turmoil. With Aunt May and Tony Stark gone, Peter pours everything into being Spider-Man, even as it begins to take a toll on his mental health.

“He is dedicating his entire existence to his job. That’s the core theme that I find incredibly relatable,” Cretton said. “I think most people at certain points in our lives have gone through loss. At least for me, and I think for many people, the result can be: ‘Screw it. I’m just going to work. I’m going to do nothing else but work.’ That’s obviously not the most healthy state.”

Producer Amy Pascal also highlighted that the film focuses less on universe-ending threats and more on Peter’s internal struggles. She described it as a more emotional narrative where the stakes are personal rather than cosmic.

“[Brand New Day] is a more internal movie,” Pascal explained. “And the bigness of it is emotional, not worlds exploding.”

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The film features Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, and Tramell Tillman, among others. It is produced by Marvel Studios, Sony Pictures, and Pascal Pictures.

The story follows Peter as he patrols New York alone while managing new changes in his powers and a growing sense of isolation. The film is also expected to introduce him to street-level characters like the Punisher and Hulk, while exploring his identity without the support system he once had.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is scheduled for release on July 31 and is being described by Marvel as the start of a new phase for the character, one that finally places Peter Parker back where he began: alone, grounded, and responsible for protecting his city.
