Nicolas Cage Reveals Why He Named His Son Kal-El, Superman’s Birth Name
Nicolas Cage has shared the story behind his choice to name his son Kal-El, a name deeply tied to Superman’s mythology, although he insists it wasn’t a decision made out of fandom.
In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Cage discussed his son Kal-El, whom he has with his third wife Alice Kim. The dialogue centered on the uniqueness of the name and the reasons behind his choice. Cage emphasized that his decision was not influenced by a strong attachment to Superman as a character.
He explained that it was the name itself that captivated him. He stated, “The Superman thing that happened, but I liked that it’s a name. It’s a genuine name. It’s actually a Hebrew name. It means the voice of God.” Cage has always found “Kal-El” to be a beautiful name in its own right, independent of any superhero connotations.
Kal-El is recognized in DC Comics mythology as Superman’s birth name. On Krypton, Superman is not referred to as Clark Kent; his original name is Kal-El, reflecting the Kryptonian language and identity. In the narrative, his father Jor-El sends him to Earth before Krypton’s destruction. The name has become one of the most iconic aspects of Superman’s origin, symbolizing both his alien heritage and his connection to something greater than human existence.
Cage clarified that his choice was more about the name’s meaning and sound rather than comic book enthusiasm. He also acknowledged that he wasn’t particularly obsessed with Superman during his childhood, preferring darker or more monstrous characters like Ghost Rider and The Incredible Hulk. This context helps explain why he does not view the name as a tribute to a superhero.
Cage’s career also has a notable Hollywood connection to Superman. In the 1990s, he was cast to portray Superman in a film titled Superman Lives, directed by Tim Burton. This project became one of the most infamous unmade superhero films in Hollywood, facing significant development challenges, including script revisions and budget issues, ultimately leading to its cancellation before filming could commence.
Despite the film never materializing, Cage’s link to Superman has persisted. Years later, he made a brief appearance as Superman in the 2023 film The Flash, utilizing digital effects and archival-style imagery to recreate the character in a multiverse sequence.
In another interview, Cage expressed his surprise at how the final scene was constructed, stating, “When I went to the picture, it was me fighting a giant spider. I did not do that. That was not what I did.” This comment highlighted the differences between his original performance and the final version.
Thus, the name Kal-El occupies a unique space at the crossroads of mythology, personal preference, and Hollywood history. It merges ancient language interpretation, where “El” is often linked to divinity in Hebrew traditions, with contemporary pop culture shaped by DC Comics.
For Cage, the meaning is straightforward. He chose the name simply because he liked it, not due to Superman’s legacy. Nevertheless, given his near-casting in Superman Lives and his later return to the role in The Flash, the connection between his son’s name and the superhero mythos remains difficult to entirely disentangle.
