Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Reunite for New Disney+ Docuseries
Disney+ has officially greenlit a new docuseries featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, marking yet another collaboration between the two actors following their work in Deadpool & Wolverine. The announcement was made by Disney+ along with the production partners involved in the project.
This series will showcase Reynolds and Jackman as they dive into the competitive sailing world through their ownership of the Bonds Flying Roos team, which competes in the SailGP Championship. According to the official description, the show will follow elite sailing teams as they travel around the globe and engage in high-speed races, while also introducing the two Hollywood stars to the sport’s intense atmosphere.
The show will highlight the Australian team’s challenges against top international rivals in a global competition. It also emphasizes the leadership of driver and CEO Tom Slingsby, an Olympic gold medallist, America’s Cup winner, and multiple-time SailGP champion. The series will focus on both the sporting competition and the behind-the-scenes learning experiences for its celebrity owners.
In a joint statement, Reynolds and Jackman expressed their excitement about the project, saying, “This is our first collaboration since ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and we once again anticipate action, comedy, heart but with a lot more water,” adding, “And (fingers crossed) pirates. We hope there’s pirates in SailGP.” Their comments reflect the playful dynamic both actors share, especially when collaborating.
SailGP is a global sailing championship where national teams race identical 50-foot foiling catamarans that can reach speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour. The competition features some of the world’s most experienced sailors and includes a substantial prize pool, heightening the stakes of the races.
This new docuseries continues a growing trend at Disney and FX of celebrity-led sports documentaries. A notable example is Welcome to Wrexham, which follows Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership of Welsh football club Wrexham AFC. Another related series, Necaxa, focuses on Eva Longoria’s involvement with the Mexican football club of the same name. Reynolds and McElhenney also serve as executive producers on several of these projects.
The sailing series is being produced by Maximum Effort and Eureka Productions in partnership with SailGP and the Bonds Flying Roos team. Brent Hodge is attached as director and showrunner. According to Disney Television Studios executive Eric Schrier, the project aims to provide viewers with an inside look at both the sport and the team’s journey. He stated that the series will showcase “what it takes to compete at the highest level” while bringing the story to a global Disney+ audience.
While the show does not yet have an official title or release date, it adds another exciting project to the ongoing collaboration between Reynolds and Jackman, who have continued to work together beyond their Marvel roles.
