Emilia Clarke is setting the record straight on one of the most talked-about rumors surrounding Game of Thrones. The actress revealed that the widely circulated salary figures associated with the HBO fantasy series were significantly inflated.

In a recent chat with Variety, Clarke reflected on her years portraying Daenerys Targaryen and tackled the persistent claims that the main cast members were earning approximately $300,000 per episode during the show’s final seasons. While this figure has been repeated for years, Clarke emphasized that fans have seriously overestimated the actual earnings of the actors.

“We didn’t earn that much,” Clarke remarked, laughing off the rumors. “Can you imagine? I’d have been driving a couple of Porsches!”

The actress explained that while Game of Thrones dramatically changed her financial situation, the salary figures discussed online grew much larger than reality over time. Clarke noted that the show’s success provided her with stability and allowed her to assist her family, including paying off her parents’ mortgage, but she clarified that many of the viral salary figures were exaggerated.

For years, the reported salaries of the HBO cast became part of the show’s lore. Given that Game of Thrones evolved into one of the most significant television series ever, many viewers assumed the actors were receiving substantial Hollywood-level paychecks during the later seasons. Clarke’s statements now suggest that the reality was much more modest than fans had believed.

Clarke candidly discussed how her relationship with fame and success became complicated after the show gained worldwide popularity. She admitted that there was a time when she measured her success by awards, money, and public recognition. After losing the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2019, Clarke realized she needed to reassess how she defined her career.

“I’m embarrassed to admit that not winning an Emmy was a really significant thing,” she shared with Variety. Following the loss, she returned home feeling disappointed and emotionally drained. The next day, she resolved to stop defining herself through trophies or external validation.

Clarke also reflected on how Game of Thrones transformed her life in ways beyond finances. She joined the series at a young age and was relatively unknown in Hollywood. According to her, landing the role of Daenerys was almost serendipitous after HBO decided to recast parts of the original pilot.

At that time, Clarke was working at the London Film Museum when her agent called her about auditioning for the fantasy series. She admitted she had little knowledge of what Game of Thrones was before the audition process began.

The actress also discussed the pressure that came with becoming one of television’s most recognizable figures. While she described the fame as overwhelming at times, she noted that public attention eventually faded naturally after the series concluded.

“I spent a lot of time trying to understand it,” Clarke explained. “And then you realize it’s just a formula: The less you’re on TV, the less famous you are. It comes and it goes.”

Even after starring in projects linked to Star Wars, Marvel, and Terminator, Clarke acknowledged that not every project turned out as she had hoped. Nevertheless, she now approaches acting differently, choosing roles based on enjoyment rather than pressure or expectations.

Today, Clarke expresses gratitude for what Game of Thrones provided her, despite the stress, fame, and rumors that followed the show for years. And contrary to popular belief, it did not come with a garage full of luxury sports cars.
