Tom Holland Discusses Peter Parker’s Loneliness in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Tom Holland recently shared insights about ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, highlighting the surprising partnership between Spider-Man and The Punisher, portrayed by Jon Bernthal.
In an interview with Collider as part of its Summer Preview series, Holland expressed his enthusiasm for how the relationship between the two characters became a standout element of the film. According to Ryan O’Rourke’s report for Collider, Holland was thrilled with the dynamic that unfolded both on and off the script.
He noted that collaborating with Bernthal infused a fresh energy into the narrative. He stated, “I think one of my favourite aspects of this new film is the relationship between The Punisher and Spider-Man. It’s no secret that I absolutely love Jon Bernthal, and sharing the screen with him and building this new onscreen relationship was so fun.”
Holland also mentioned that the final cut of their scenes evolved during production. He praised director Destin Daniel Cretton for granting the actors the freedom to explore. He remarked, “What is in the film is very different to what was on the page, and I’m so grateful to Destin for giving us the freedom to play with it and create something really special.”
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ picks up after the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, where Peter Parker’s identity has been erased from everyone’s memory. The new film follows Peter as he navigates life in solitude while continuing his secret life as Spider-Man. Over time, this isolation begins to take an emotional toll on him, particularly as he observes the lives of those he once knew moving forward without him.
The narrative also introduces new obstacles, including alterations to Peter’s powers and the emergence of new threats. As the story progresses, Spider-Man finds himself relying on unexpected allies, including The Punisher, leading to a unique team-up that diverges from what audiences have previously seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Holland further discussed the film’s tone and how the creative team strived to balance darker themes with Spider-Man’s characteristic humor. He explained that achieving this balance was challenging, especially following the emotional conclusion of ‘No Way Home’. He said, “It was tricky to find the balance. We really didn’t want to take the sacrifice in No Way Home for granted.”
He added that much of the humor in the new film arises from situational contexts rather than conventional jokes, which helps maintain a grounded yet entertaining narrative.
According to Collider’s report, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ also delves into Peter’s development after years of personal sacrifice and isolation. Holland mentioned that this iteration of the character feels more mature, influenced by the time elapsed between films.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film continues Peter Parker’s journey as he attempts to rebuild his life while grappling with personal loss and new responsibilities. Holland hinted that the relationship between Spider-Man and The Punisher might extend beyond this film, depending on audience reception.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set to hit theaters on July 31, distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.
