Zendaya has finally opened up about the emotional conclusion of ‘Euphoria’ after the HBO series ended with the shocking death of her character, Rue.

In footage shared after the season finale aired on May 31, Zendaya addressed the cast and crew on her last day of filming. The actress, who has portrayed Rue since the show’s debut, became emotional while expressing her gratitude to everyone involved in the series.

“I want to say thank you. I’m really grateful for every single one of you,” Zendaya stated.

She reflected on her long journey with the show and the people who have supported her throughout.

“Many of you have been here from the beginning and have watched me grow up,” she continued. “It’s been such a pleasure and an honor. Thank you so much.”

Zendaya’s farewell followed one of the most dramatic episodes in the series’ history. The finale revealed that Rue did not survive. In the episode, Alamo, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, discovered Rue had been secretly working against him. After learning the truth, he gave her painkillers laced with fentanyl. Rue later overdosed and died during the episode.

The narrative then shifted to Ali, portrayed by Colman Domingo. After discovering Rue dead on his couch, Ali sought revenge on Alamo. The final scenes unfolded at the farm where Rue had spent time earlier in the season. There, Ali honored her memory while sitting at the dinner table and saying grace.

The decision to kill off Rue has already ignited strong reactions from fans, but ‘Euphoria’ creator Sam Levinson insists the ending was crafted with a deeper message in mind.

In the same post-episode segment, Levinson praised Zendaya for her performance throughout the series.

“Zendaya’s performance has been so wonderful and layered over the course of these seasons. We fell in love with this character — this girl who was flawed and f**ked up but has a good heart,” he remarked.

Levinson explained that Rue’s fate was tied to the show’s ongoing exploration of addiction and its repercussions.

“In the end, I wanted to tell an honest story about addiction. I also wanted to tell a story about grief and the emotional turmoil that it can create,” he explained.

The writer and director described the finale as the most truthful conclusion for the character.

“The honest ending is that people like Rue don’t make it,” Levinson stated. “People relapse and they f**k up. They’re not ready to get clean. And they weren’t dying like they are now with the influx of fentanyl into this country.”

Levinson also referenced the death of actor Angus Cloud, who passed away in July 2025 due to an accidental overdose. He noted that the reality of addiction today influenced how he wanted to conclude Rue’s story.

“There’s no reason to sugarcoat it. I wanted to tell the story for Angus and for people who weren’t granted a second chance,” Levinson concluded.

This information was shared in HBO’s post-finale segment that aired after the final episode of ‘Euphoria’. The complete series is now available for streaming on HBO Max.
