Alexa Demie is sharing insights about her early experiences on ‘Euphoria’ and the skepticism that surrounded her casting as Maddy Perez. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, released just before the show’s Season 3 finale, she discussed rumors about her acting future and reflected on how close she came to missing out on the role that brought her fame.

This information stems from her conversation with The Hollywood Reporter and comments made by creator Sam Levinson.

Demie lightly addressed speculation regarding her potential departure from Hollywood after ‘Euphoria’ concludes. Instead of providing a definitive answer, she responded with humor, saying, “Should we just ride with it?” when asked about the retirement rumors.

She also opened up about the challenges she faced early in her career in finding roles that resonated with her identity. Demie noted that she often auditioned for characters that didn’t reflect her background. She expressed, “I was reading it, and it really hit me — and I kept having that experience. I was sick of going into those rooms… I’m more of the energy of like, ‘No, I’m going to show you I can do it.’”

At one point, she even auditioned for Rue before ultimately being cast as Maddy. Reflecting on that time, she recalled feeling disheartened and turned to music as an outlet. She shared, “This is the end of everything, my life’s over.” A friend helped her channel that frustration into music, which eventually led to her being called back for Maddy.

Creator Sam Levinson also discussed the casting process and the initial pushback from HBO executives. He revealed that the network had a very different vision for Maddy. Levinson explained, “But HBO didn’t think she was right for the part, because they had imagined a blond cheerleader.” He mentioned that he had to guide Demie through early casting discussions, aware that she would encounter bias due to the executives’ preconceived notions about the character.

Demie also shared her initial concerns about the sex scenes in the series. She felt compelled to accept everything without question when she was younger, stating, “I thought that if I said no to doing them, then I wouldn’t have the part.” Over time, she became more comfortable voicing her opinions and received support from the production team.

She reflected on filming emotional and sexual storylines involving Maddy, noting how her perspective shifted once she experienced them on set. Demie learned what she was comfortable with and made adjustments moving forward.

Regarding fame, she emphasized that she is not seeking constant attention, stating, “It’s like, did you ever think that I don’t want it? People really take the authority out of your hands.” She values her personal life and does not feel pressured to alter it for public expectations.

The interview underscores that Demie’s journey to portraying Maddy was not straightforward, highlighting how both she and Levinson recognized potential that others initially overlooked.
