‘Man of Tomorrow’ Unveils Nicholas Hoult’s Comics-Accurate Lex Luthor War Suit
A new behind-the-scenes image from Man of Tomorrow features Nicholas Hoult fully suited up as Lex Luthor in a comics-accurate war suit. This exciting reveal comes from posts shared by James Gunn on social media, where he also discussed the costume and the ongoing film production.
James Gunn, the film’s director and co-head of DC Studios, posted the image of Hoult on set, confirming that this iteration of Lex Luthor’s suit is practical and designed for movement. The film is currently in production and serves as a sequel to Superman.
Gunn shared the image with a straightforward caption, stating, “Fit check. Live from the set of Man of Tomorrow.”
The suit is inspired by one of Lex Luthor’s most iconic comic book appearances, featuring a green armored war suit typically used when he confronts Superman. This version has been adapted for live-action while retaining the core design that fans recognize from the comics.
Gunn elaborated on the suit’s functionality in production, stating that it was crafted to be practical rather than merely decorative. He mentioned that the suit is “100 percent practical,” allowing Hoult to move freely while wearing it.
He added, “It’s unbelievably mobile, and yeah in the movie version he’s added unbreakable Lexiglas.”
This new look indicates that Lex Luthor will not just be a businessman or strategist in Man of Tomorrow, but will also physically engage in the action. The suit hints at a more direct conflict between Lex and Superman than seen in previous portrayals of the character.
Nicholas Hoult reprises his role as Lex Luthor after first appearing in the DC Universe’s Superman film alongside David Corenswet, who plays Superman. The new movie continues their rivalry while shifting the narrative to a larger threat that compels them to collaborate.
According to early story details shared by Gunn, Man of Tomorrow will focus on both Superman and Lex Luthor as central figures. The two are expected to form an uneasy alliance when they confront a much greater danger, Brainiac.
Gunn has described Brainiac as a significant force in the narrative, representing pure intelligence devoid of emotion or humanity. This creates a natural contrast with Superman, who is often characterized by his empathy and human values.

The cast for Man of Tomorrow continues to expand. In addition to Hoult and Corenswet, the film features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and several other returning DC characters. Milly Alcock is also set to appear as Supergirl, with other heroes from across the DC universe expected to return.
James Gunn previously stated that the film is not solely focused on Superman. He emphasized that Lex Luthor plays an equally crucial role in the story. He remarked, “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”
Man of Tomorrow is set to be released in July 2027, and this first look at Lex Luthor’s war suit offers fans an early glimpse of a more physical and intense version of the character in the new DC Universe.
