Will Rhaenyra and Daemon Survive Season 3? Ryan Condal Discusses Their Relationship in ‘House of the Dragon’
House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has shared insights into the evolving relationship between Daemon and Rhaenyra in Season 3, while also hinting at the significant Battle of the Gullet that kicks off the new season.
At the heart of Season 3 is the increasingly intense connection between Daemon Targaryen, portrayed by Matt Smith, and Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D’Arcy. Condal reveals that Daemon’s loyalty to Rhaenyra is unwavering, yet it carries a perilous edge. He explained, “He [Daemon] believes with every fiber of his being that it was Rhaenyra who was always meant to take the throne, and he will stop at nothing to see it happen.”
This conviction drives much of the conflict ahead. Daemon is wholly dedicated to placing Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne, even if it leads him deeper into violence and chaos. Concurrently, Rhaenyra must grapple with what such support means for her identity and leadership.
Condal described Rhaenyra’s internal conflict as a pivotal aspect of the season. He noted that her journey raises the question of how far she is willing to go under Daemon’s influence, adding, “For Rhaenyra, the question will be, ‘How ‘Daemon’ am I willing to become in the pursuit of my goal?’” Their relationship transcends mere politics or personal ties, evolving into a constant push-and-pull that influences every significant decision.
While their dynamic remains central to the narrative, Season 3 also begins with a dramatic escalation in warfare. The Battle of the Gullet, inspired by George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, opens the season and establishes the tone for what lies ahead. Condal likened the episode’s scale to that of a major film production, saying, “This one episode was the ‘effort’ equivalent of making a major franchise movie.”
Despite the grand spectacle, he emphasized that the emotional and character-driven narrative remains at the forefront. The chaos of war only heightens the pressure on Rhaenyra and Daemon’s relationship, compelling them to depend on each other more, even as that reliance grows increasingly perilous.

Condal also elaborated on how Daemon’s mindset has evolved following the events of Season 2. He described Daemon as more determined than ever, with a clear sense of purpose that makes him both effective and unpredictable. This focus enhances his loyalty to Rhaenyra, but also escalates the stakes of every decision he makes on her behalf.
As the battle for the Iron Throne intensifies, their bond becomes a source of both strength and potential vulnerability. Rhaenyra must determine how much of Daemon’s ruthlessness she is willing to embrace in her quest for victory.
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres Sunday, June 21 on HBO, starting with the Battle of the Gullet and continuing the saga of two Targaryens intertwined by ambition, power, and a dangerously devoted bond.
