Quentin Tarantino Critiques Modern Hollywood as a ‘Flavorless Sausage Factory’
Quentin Tarantino expresses concern that many contemporary Hollywood films lack the magic that once defined cinema. In a recent article for Sight & Sound magazine, the Oscar-winning director voiced his dissatisfaction with the current film landscape and shared why he often prefers books over new movies.
Tarantino finds it increasingly challenging to enjoy new releases, as he often spots numerous flaws. He believes that many modern films suffer from weak narratives, poor casting decisions, and a tendency to cater to audience expectations rather than striving for artistic excellence.
In his piece for Sight & Sound, Tarantino remarked, “Flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers or just plain stupid sit usually torpedoes every new movie coming out of the flavorless sausage factory that used to call itself Hollywood.”*
The director elaborated that films no longer evoke the same emotions they once did. He noted that the thrill and wonder that initially drew him to cinema have become increasingly scarce.
“These days, the entire concept of what is a movie is more inclined to inspire contempt in me than generosity,” Tarantino wrote.
While he has found enjoyment in a few films recently, none have fully captivated him. He mentioned Steven Spielberg’s 2021 adaptation of West Side Story and Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Chapters 1 and 2 as films he appreciated. However, he felt they still fell short of the immersive experiences he used to cherish in cinema.
“I’ve seen movies I liked since then – ‘West Side Story’ (2021); ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ Chapter 1 and 2 (both 2024), a few others, but nothing that really held me in its grip and swept me away to the magical land of enjoyment that I use to visit regularly and was the reason I loved movies above all other artforms. These days I’d rather read a book,” he wrote.
Despite his critiques of Hollywood, one recent film did manage to impress him. Tarantino praised The Rip, a Netflix crime thriller directed by Joe Carnahan. The film stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as law enforcement officers who uncover corruption linked to millions of dollars in cartel money within the Miami-Dade Police Department.
The cast also includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, and Kyle Chandler. Tarantino commended the project, particularly highlighting the screenplay.
“A suspenseful new movie has come out that did grab me and held me for its entire duration,” he wrote. “The film is an exciting cop thriller with a novel premise that manages to deliver the goods in really clever ways.”
He also praised Carnahan’s direction, the cast’s performances, the cinematography by Juan Miguel Azpiroz, and the screenplay crafted by Joe Carnahan and Michael McGrale.
Outside of filmmaking, Tarantino is currently developing a stage production titled The Popinjay Cavalier. This swashbuckling comedy, set in 1930s Europe, is expected to debut in London’s West End in 2027.
As for his cinematic future, Tarantino has yet to disclose details about his long-anticipated tenth and final feature film. Fans eagerly await news regarding this project, which could signify the conclusion of one of Hollywood’s most impactful directing careers.
