Shawn Levy Suggests Crossover Idea Blending ‘Star Wars’ With ‘Backrooms’
Shawn Levy has ignited a lively discussion online by proposing a surprising crossover concept that merges Star Wars with the viral horror sensation Backrooms.
This idea emerges at a time when both franchises are making headlines for vastly different reasons. A24’s Backrooms has emerged as a breakout box office hit, exceeding expectations during its opening run. Its success has garnered attention not only as a horror film but also as a cultural phenomenon, especially alongside significant Star Wars releases.
Levy, who is currently involved in the production of Star Wars: Starfighter and also serves as a producer on Backrooms, shared his thoughts during a recent interview with Vanity Fair. He acknowledged that his close work with both projects has naturally led him to envision what a crossover between these two universes might look like.
“Right now, I’m making a movie called Star Wars: Starfighter, and so I very much have Star Wars on my mind. And I can’t help but be captivated by a Backrooms x Star Wars mashup and, luckily, I’ve got a little bit of involvement in both, so I’ll see what I can do,” Levy stated.
His remarks quickly gained traction as they connect two distinctly different storytelling realms.
Levy’s dual involvement in both projects has made the prospect of a crossover particularly intriguing for fans, even if it remains a speculative idea. However, turning such a concept into a reality would be quite complex due to rights ownership and studio limitations. Disney holds the rights to the Star Wars franchise, while Backrooms operates under a separate production framework, making any official crossover unlikely at this time.
Nonetheless, Levy’s comments have sparked conversations about potential creative collaborations between the two worlds. Some industry observers speculate that rather than a direct narrative crossover, future collaborations might occur behind the scenes, with filmmakers or creative teams transitioning between projects or sharing ideas across franchises.

There has also been ongoing fan speculation about whether Star Wars could ever delve into darker or more experimental themes. While the franchise has typically remained within the realms of space fantasy and sci-fi adventure, newer interpretations and spin-offs have occasionally introduced more unique or surreal concepts.
Some fans believe that elements like the “World Between Worlds” featured in Star Wars: Ahsoka already hint at more abstract storytelling possibilities that could align loosely with the unsettling tone of Backrooms.
For now, Levy’s idea remains just that—an idea inspired by his work within two very different creative realms. However, his comments have added another dimension to the ongoing dialogue about how far major franchises can push their storytelling boundaries in today’s entertainment landscape.
