The official trailer for ‘The Invite’ has dropped, showcasing a seemingly simple dinner between neighbors that quickly escalates into an awkward and unexpected affair. Directed by Olivia Wilde, the film is being described as a blend of uncomfortable comedy and relationship drama.

The narrative centers on Joe and Angela, portrayed by Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde, who invite their neighbors over for what they anticipate will be a typical dinner. However, the evening takes an unforeseen turn, leading to a series of surprising developments.

The trailer begins in a tranquil suburban home, where Angela is busy preparing for the evening. Joe enters and notices her meticulous efforts to create the perfect atmosphere, complete with food and decorations. The initial tone suggests Angela is eager to impress their guests, while Joe appears more laid-back and slightly irritated by her efforts.

As the neighbors, played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, arrive, the evening starts off politely but soon becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Joe quickly develops a dislike for Hawk, played by Norton, and expresses to Angela that he finds him odd. Meanwhile, Angela seems intrigued by both guests and attempts to keep the dinner flowing smoothly despite the underlying tension.

As the night progresses, conversations grow more awkward. Joe is reluctant to engage, while Angela strives to maintain a friendly atmosphere. The mood shifts from polite dinner chatter to an unpredictable and tense environment.

At one point, Pina, portrayed by Penélope Cruz, remarks on how people have limited meaningful opportunities to connect with others. Joe becomes wary of the conversation’s direction, causing the tension at the table to escalate.

The situation takes a dramatic turn when the neighbors reveal their true intentions for the visit. They are not merely there for dinner; they aim to invite Joe and Angela into a more personal and unexpected arrangement. The trailer hints at a proposal for a shared romantic or sexual experience, leaving Joe and Angela in utter shock.

The trailer concludes with a mix of confusion, awkward reactions, and uncomfortable humor as both couples grapple with the unfolding situation. One brief moment features Angela and Pina sharing a kiss, while Joe increasingly appears out of place.

The final scenes of the trailer leave viewers with a quieter moment, as Joe opens a bottle of wine while Angela awkwardly states, “Sorry, we don’t um have people over very often.” This line underscores how unprepared the couple is for the unexpected turn of events.

‘The Invite’ is directed by Olivia Wilde and penned by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones. It is based on the Spanish film ‘The People Upstairs’ by Cesc Gay. The movie is produced by Ben Browning, Megan Ellison, and David Permut, with A24 managing distribution.

The film premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24. It is set to hit select U.S. theaters on June 26, followed by a broader nationwide release on July 10.
