Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Popcorn Bucket Unveiled as Fans React
IMAX has unveiled a unique collectible popcorn bucket for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, which is already generating buzz among fans. This design is inspired by the IMAX MSM 9802 Keighley film camera, directly connecting the collectible to the film’s large-format production style.
This reveal coincided with the launch of ticket sales, announced via IMAX’s official Instagram account. The post described the film with the message, “Ithaca’s King is coming back. Tickets to #TheOdysseyMovie in IMAX are on sale now. Link in bio. #ShotEntirelyWithIMAXFilmCameras.” This campaign emphasizes the film’s complete use of IMAX 70mm cameras, which is a significant aspect of its production identity.
IMAX has also released brief promotional clips featuring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, both of whom play pivotal roles in the film. These promotions are part of the early marketing strategy leading up to the movie’s global theatrical release.
The Odyssey is both written and directed by Christopher Nolan and is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic of the same name. The narrative follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, portrayed by Matt Damon, as he endeavors to return home after the Trojan War. Throughout his journey, he encounters perilous mythological creatures and daunting challenges while striving to reunite with his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.
The film boasts a star-studded ensemble cast, including Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Nolan is producing the film alongside Emma Thomas through their company Syncopy.
As per production details released by the studio, Nolan began writing the film in March 2024 and secured backing from Universal Pictures later that year. Casting continued into early 2025, with Damon confirmed as the lead in February. The project was officially announced in December 2024.
Nolan aims for a grounded interpretation of Greek mythology, drawing inspiration from Emily Wilson’s modern translation of The Odyssey and classic visual storytelling from filmmaker Ray Harryhausen. Filming occurred across various countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and Malta, along with studio work in Los Angeles.
With an estimated budget of around 250 million dollars, The Odyssey is reported to be Nolan’s most expensive film to date and his first project filmed entirely using IMAX 70mm cameras.
The film is set for theatrical release in the United States on July 17, and will be available in IMAX theaters worldwide through Universal Pictures.
With the unveiling of the new popcorn bucket, IMAX continues to heighten anticipation for what is already being touted as one of the most significant cinematic releases of 2026.
