‘Euphoria’ Star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje Supports Zendaya’s Finale Death Twist
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has come forward to defend Euphoria creator Sam Levinson following the series finale, which ignited significant debate over its conclusion and Rue Bennett’s fate.
Adewale, who portrayed drug kingpin Alamo Brown in the final season, addressed the backlash surrounding Rue’s storyline and the choice to conclude the series on such a somber note. In the finale, Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, tragically dies from an overdose involving fentanyl-laced pills linked to Alamo’s drug supply.
According to Adewale, the ending was not intended to be shocking or random for mere dramatic effect. Instead, he emphasized that the creative team aimed to depict a very real and painful aspect of addiction. He explained that the narrative was crafted to mirror the experiences many families face when addiction results in loss.
He also praised Zendaya for delivering a performance that powerfully captured this reality, showcasing Rue’s final moments in a deeply emotional and human manner. The actor highlighted that the finale aimed to remain grounded in the harsh truths of addiction rather than providing a lighter or more optimistic ending that would feel unrealistic.
Adewale also linked the ending to a tribute within the show. He suggested that Rue’s concluding story arc held emotional significance tied to the memory of Angus Cloud, who portrayed Fezco in earlier seasons and passed away in 2023 from an accidental overdose. The bond between Rue and Fezco has always been one of the emotional cores of the series, and the finale brings that relationship into its final moment through a dream sequence.
In this sequence, Rue briefly reunites with Fezco in what is depicted as a peaceful, emotional vision before her death. This moment is meant to reflect her memories, regrets, and emotional connections to those she has lost along the way. It also ties back to the show’s ongoing themes of friendship, grief, and addiction.
Adewale stated that the intention behind this approach was to honor that emotional history while also illustrating the consequences of addiction in a straightforward manner. His remarks indicate that Sam Levinson aimed for the ending to feel rooted in reality, even if it was challenging for audiences to accept.

In the series, Rue’s death occurs after she ingests pills that were unknowingly laced with fentanyl, sourced from Alamo Brown’s supply chain. Her overdose unfolds following a lengthy emotional buildup in the finale, which also features hallucinations, childhood memories, and imagined conversations with people from her past.
The actor explained that the narrative was influenced by real-world issues surrounding the fentanyl crisis. Levinson has also previously mentioned in interviews that Rue’s original storyline was different, but the direction was altered to reflect a more realistic outcome. He has stated that the notion of a perfectly happy ending did not align with the reality of addiction stories he sought to portray.
Adewale defended that creative choice, asserting that the goal was not shock value but honesty. He also noted that Zendaya’s performance helped anchor the finale in emotion rather than spectacle.
The conversation surrounding the ending continues among fans, particularly given the connection to Angus Cloud and the show’s long-standing focus on addiction and recovery.
