Disney and Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’ is on track for a significant box office debut, with early estimates indicating a $150 million opening weekend in North America. If these projections hold true, it would mark the highest opening in the franchise’s history.

Co-directed by Andrew Stanton and Kenna Harris, this animated sequel continues one of Pixar’s most beloved series, which has delighted audiences for over three decades. Current tracking suggests that ‘Toy Story 5’ could easily surpass the $120.9 million opening of ‘Toy Story 4,’ which debuted in 2019 before the pandemic changed the theatrical landscape.

Industry projections also place ‘Toy Story 5’ at the forefront of the 2026 box office year-to-date. It is expected to outperform other major releases, including Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ which previously opened with $131.7 million. If these numbers hold, Pixar would reclaim the title for the top domestic opening of the year.

The film is also being positioned as one of the strongest summer releases to date. Early audience tracking shows robust interest across various demographics, with both family audiences and younger viewers demonstrating high intent. Reports indicate that first-choice interest is particularly strong among adults under 25 and families with children, consistent with the franchise’s enduring appeal.

Ticket sales for ‘Toy Story 5’ recently opened, adding to the early momentum ahead of its June 19 release. The film’s strategic placement on the Pixar summer calendar is expected to provide a strong runway during a peak theatrical period.

While expectations are high, analysts caution that projections have shifted in the past for earlier entries in the franchise. ‘Toy Story 4’ ultimately exceeded initial tracking estimates, suggesting that ‘Toy Story 5’ could also fluctuate based on the final marketing push and audience response in the weeks leading up to its release.

The film features several core voice actors returning, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Tony Hale, and others, alongside new characters voiced by performers such as Greta Lee, Conan O’Brien, and Bad Bunny. The story continues the narrative established in previous films, focusing on changes in Bonnie’s life as new technology and toys reshape her imagination.

Pixar’s return to the franchise is notable for its production changes, as this is the first main ‘Toy Story’ installment without co-creator John Lasseter. However, longtime Pixar composer Randy Newman returns, accompanied by new musical contributions from Taylor Swift.

Directed by Andrew Stanton, who has previously worked on major Pixar titles, the film aims to balance nostalgia with a modern update to the franchise’s themes. Early descriptions suggest a shift toward how children engage with new forms of digital play while maintaining the emotional core that has defined the series.

With strong tracking, a prime release date, and one of animation’s most recognizable brands, ‘Toy Story 5’ is set to be one of the biggest box office stories of 2026 as summer approaches.
