Steven Spielberg recently shared his thoughts on the success of hit horror films during a red carpet interview for his upcoming movie ‘Disclosure Day’, set to premiere in theaters on June 12. He expressed admiration for the horror films ‘Obsession’ and ‘Backrooms’, noting how quickly they captivated audiences.

Spielberg has publicly commended a new generation of horror filmmakers after the low-budget films ‘Obsession’ and ‘Backrooms’ achieved impressive results at the global box office. At the screening of ‘Disclosure Day’, Spielberg remarked on the remarkable success of both films, which were made with very limited budgets.

In the interview, he stated, “I’m so happy for them. I think it’s so fantastic.” He expressed surprise at the financial achievements of both films, highlighting that ‘Obsession’ was produced for under one million dollars, while ‘Backrooms’ had a budget of approximately nine to ten million dollars. He added, “They’re doing so well, and I just applaud them.” Spielberg mentioned that he had already watched ‘Obsession’ and enjoyed it, and he plans to see ‘Backrooms’ soon.

The box office triumph of both films has sparked widespread discussion within the industry. ‘Obsession’, directed by Curry Barker, premiered on May 15 and quickly became a major hit for Focus Features, grossing over 151 million dollars in the United States alone, making it the studio’s highest-grossing domestic release to date.

Critics have responded positively to the film’s intense style and psychological depth. Many reviews highlight its low-budget approach as a strength, emphasizing how it builds tension through simple settings and character-driven storytelling rather than relying on large effects. Some critics described it as uncomfortable and disturbing in a way that lingers with viewers, while others praised its tight direction and emotional intensity. Audience reactions have also been robust, with word-of-mouth helping it exceed initial release expectations.

‘Backrooms’, directed by Kane Parsons, has also exceeded expectations. This film is based on Parsons’ earlier online horror series and marks his debut as a feature film director at a young age. It opened with 81.4 million dollars in the domestic market and has reached 118 million dollars worldwide, making it the highest-grossing A24 film in the United States and the first from the studio to surpass the 100 million dollar mark domestically.

Critical reception for ‘Backrooms’ has emphasized its atmosphere and visual style. Reviewers have praised its unsettling tone and the effective translation of internet horror concepts into a cinematic experience. Some critics noted that its structure feels experimental, while others highlighted its sense of mystery and visual design as its strongest aspects. However, a few reviews pointed out that the narrative can feel unclear at times, particularly for viewers unfamiliar with the original online series.

Spielberg’s remarks come at a time when both films are being highlighted as examples of how low-budget horror can resonate with large audiences. His praise underscores the genre’s ability to support emerging filmmakers and innovative ideas, particularly when fueled by strong concepts and online fan engagement.

Both ‘Obsession’ and ‘Backrooms’ are now recognized as breakout successes in the horror genre, not only in terms of financial performance but also for their cultural impact. Their achievements suggest that audiences are increasingly receptive to smaller, original horror films, especially when they provide something distinct from mainstream studio offerings.
