‘Masters of the Universe’ Underperforms at the Box Office With Disappointing Opening
The box office results for Masters of the Universe have fallen short of expectations, as indicated by early industry reports from box office analysts and trade coverage monitoring the weekend’s performance.
The Amazon MGM Studios film, a $170 million production inspired by the Mattel toy franchise, debuted in theaters with a weaker start than anticipated.
On its opening Friday, including previews, the film garnered approximately $11.7 million domestically. Early projections estimate its total for the opening weekend to be around $30.1 million. While this isn’t a complete failure, it significantly undercuts the hopes of the studio and tracking reports leading up to the release.
This film is part of a broader initiative by Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel to rejuvenate the Masters of the Universe brand for a new audience. The aim was to rekindle interest in the classic He-Man toy line and re-establish its presence in contemporary pop culture. However, initial audience turnout indicates that the film is not resonating strongly with younger viewers.
According to the same box office analysis, the audience demographics skewed older than expected. Viewers aged over 35 comprised a significant portion of the audience, while children under 12 made up only a small fraction. This is crucial as the movie was intended to appeal to families and younger audiences, in addition to long-time fans of the original 1980s franchise.
The audience breakdown also revealed a notable male bias. Approximately two-thirds of the viewers were men, with a substantial segment coming from older fans who grew up with the original animated series. This suggests that nostalgia is driving much of the attendance rather than attracting new audience members.
Initial audience reactions were mixed but not entirely negative. The film received a B CinemaScore from opening-night viewers and earned a moderate recommendation score, with younger audiences responding more favorably than older ones in some exit surveys. However, these reactions did not translate into a stronger box office performance.
Industry reports also highlight that the film faced stiff competition during its release window. Other significant releases, including comedies and horror films that performed better than expected, diverted audience attention. This broader box office climate may have contributed to the film’s softer debut.

Marketing for Masters of the Universe was extensive, with reports suggesting significant advertising during sports broadcasts and major television events. However, competing studios also invested heavily during the same timeframe, which may have diminished the film’s visibility in a saturated media landscape.
Despite the disappointing start, there remains some optimism that the film could find its footing in the coming weeks. International box office figures have yet to be fully reported, and some analysts believe that overseas markets could enhance its overall performance.
Nevertheless, based on current domestic figures, the opening is regarded as underwhelming for a major studio tentpole. For a high-budget fantasy action film linked to a well-known franchise, expectations were considerably higher leading up to its release.
The ultimate outcome will depend on the film’s performance in its second weekend and whether audience interest increases through word of mouth. Currently, however, Masters of the Universe is being characterized in industry discussions as having a soft or disappointing start at the box office, particularly given its production scale and franchise potential.
