Amazon MGM Addresses Concerns Over ‘Masters of the Universe’ Box Office Performance
The new ‘Masters of the Universe’ film debuted in second place at the North American box office, earning an estimated $29.3 million. This large-scale fantasy action adventure is based on the classic Mattel toy line and animated series.
Despite its strong brand recognition, the opening weekend results are considered softer than anticipated for a film with a production budget nearing $200 million, excluding marketing expenses.
The financial outlook for the film indicates it will require robust performance in the upcoming weeks to move toward profitability. Theaters typically retain about half of ticket sales, which adds pressure on the long-term box office results. Initial audience turnout was largely driven by dedicated fans of the original 1980s franchise, particularly those familiar with the He-Man character.
Industry analyst Gross characterized the opening as modest for a franchise-driven action film. He noted that fantasy-based hero films outside of major superhero franchises are currently facing a more challenging market.
As he noted, “This is a soft opening for an action adventure with franchise and series potential,” adding that “right now, the only fantasy heroes doing strong business are the biggest and most established superheroes, like Spider-Man, Deadpool, Wolverine, and Superman.”
The film is part of Mattel’s expanding initiative to transform its toy brands into live-action films, following the tremendous success of ‘Barbie.’ However, unlike that film, ‘Masters of the Universe’ seems to rely more on nostalgia-driven audiences rather than broad mainstream appeal during its opening weekend.

Audience data indicates that younger viewers responded positively. According to PostTrak surveys, children under 12 gave the film a 96% “definite recommend” score, suggesting strong reception among family audiences. This could help the movie maintain steady attendance over time if positive word of mouth spreads.
Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief, responded to early criticism regarding the box office results, countering the notion that the film is underperforming. He emphasized that the studio views the opening as a solid foundation rather than a disappointment.
Wilson stated, “This weekend represents a very solid start for ‘Masters of the Universe’ and the passionate, multigenerational audience response we’re seeing around the world has been fantastic.”
He also commended the creative team behind the film, adding, “Travis Knight and the entire cast and filmmaking team have delivered something truly special, and this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy—building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.”
The studio maintains that the film is intended for long-term audience growth rather than just a strong opening weekend. They are highlighting global interest and strong family audience scores as indicators that the movie could gain momentum over time.
Nevertheless, the path ahead is challenging. With a high production cost and a competitive release landscape, ‘Masters of the Universe’ will need sustained attendance and international support to achieve profitability. The upcoming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the film can transition from a soft debut into a longer-running success story.
